Why isn't Sims starting over Durant?

If not for the concussions, I'd start Sims. Nothing against Durant, he'll be ok. I just like Sims more.

If Sims' concussions are too big of a concern for him to be a starter, he shouldn't even be on the roster. The best player should be on the first string. As a backup, he'll have to play special teams, where the collisions are usually more violent. Sim's versatility may make him the "swing" linebacker in case of injury at one of the other positions, but I still think he is better than Durant, and should start.

Concussions. Its one of the biggest reasons why Sims can't be counted on.

He really shouldn't even be playing. 5 Concussions (those was just the official count) before he ever played a game in the NFL. More with the Lions. Yet another one with the Cowboys late last season.

He is the perfect example of a player who is putting is post-NFL future in serious doubt by continuing to play despite head injuries,

Exactly. No concussions..we don't even get a sniff at him. He's on somebody elses's roster starting for much bigger money.

Leave him where he is..if he can get even 10-15 reps a game..that would be great. If that could happen all season long..they can play him more in December.

I'd hate to see him injured again.

So just nurse him.

Sims is a hell of a LB for this defense. It fits him perfectly. Plus, I absolutely love his make-up. The guy is an assassin. He blows guys up, plays with an attitude, and is just nasty and mean. He's one of those guys that offensive players are always looking to find out where they are on the field. Just nasty.

Athletically, he's fantastic. He's fast and quick and always around the ball. He will play a lot, even if Durant (who is a very good athlete himself) wins the starting spot.

The problem is, as others have mentioned, his concussions. If he isn't plagued by them, he will be a starter or a big contributor. If he is, he will probably have to quit football.

I hope he isn't though, because this defense can use his athleticism and needs his nasty attitude out on the field.

The fact over the course of their careers, Durant has been the better player... year and year out. The PFF grades aren't even close. Sims has ranged for horrible to below average. Even last year for Dallas Sims wasn't as good as what some think. I think Sims can pull off a highly visible nice play where folks go "Ooh and Aah" but then completely blow other plays where it's not noticed that he's not doing his job.

Durant has been much more consistent. Durant's not as flashing as Sims but he's much more consistent from play to play.

I think Sims himself would tell you that he has lacked consistency and focus throughout his time with Detroit, Philly and Indy. He admitted as much.

What I'm hoping is that what he said about sitting at home making him realize that he needs to work at his craft is also true. He said getting a family now and realizing that football could be over with has made him much more of a student of the game, and he is now working on the mental part. Because he has always been so physically gifted, he didn't feel like he really had to work on the mental part of the game as much. Now that he has matured and been at home sitting on his couch some, he sees how important football is and how much he needs to work on the mental aspect of his game.

I think that he played pretty darn well for us last season considering he was in probably the worst system for him in all of football, and he hadn't been through camp with Dallas and had very little prep time before he saw live game action. He wasn't all world in 2012, but considering the scheme we was in and that he came in partway through the season, I thought he played very well for us.

By all accounts he is playing exceptionally well this preseason. I'm sure a big part of that is because he is such a terrific athlete and in this scheme, that is very, very important. However, as big as a stickler as Garrett is about the details, I'm sure he knows if Sims isn't studying enough or blowing his assignments... But all we've heard out of Garrett about Sims is how well he's been playing.

I do like Durant a lot too though, and he is an exceptional athlete in his own right, so I'm fine with whichever player wins the job. The only reason I'm pulling for Sims is because he's got that mad dog mentality that I think our defense has been lacking for years and years. That attitude that Sims has is indeed catchy and will carry over to the whole unit. It will particularly if the unit plays well and has a lot of early success. They're going to be cocky and confident anyway, but with Sims out there they will have that same crazed dog attitude that he does.

Just my 2 cents.
