Why Jaydon Blue has been a non-factor this year

When he was selected in round 5 of the 2025 draft, most Cowboys fans saw RB Jaydon Blue as a speedy weapon who would probably be at the very least a Swiss Army knife secret weapon. With almost 75% of the season over, Blue has barely played, much less showed what he was drafted to be.

So…Why has Blue not been able to get on the field this year? Here are the reasons:
  • Despite his speed, Blue’s college scouting report showed he had fumble issues and had major problems in pass protection. It’s why he lasted to round 5. He apparently has still struggled in the pass protection issues.
  • Blue does not play special teams. His size hurts him as a tackler/gunner and his fumble issues keep him from kickoff returns and punts.
  • Questions arose in training camp and into the season about Blue’s commitment to improving and learning.
  • The re-emergence of Malik Davis. MD plays STs, is decent is pass blocking and has shown a burst in spot duty behind Javonte Williams.
Blue still has time to get his act together. His talent is there. But he has been reminded that in the NFL, talent alone won’t get you on the field. He needs to show a commitment to learn the offense better (especially pass protection) and exhibit that he is willing to do whatever it takes.

The 2026 off-season and TC will tell us a lot about Jaydon Blue’s commitment.

Exactly. He's on his rookie deal, so they will likely give him next camp to prove it. Don't think they give him more time than that.

RB is probably the easiest learning curve from college to pros (WRs start shockingly fast as well), and the Cowboys backfield is dying for an injection of Blue's speed.

I don't expect Blue to be up to speed in pass pro, but the fact that he can't even get on the field for five manufactured touches a game shows a deep distrust from the coaching staff.

He’s a jag. Every team has a guy like him on their roster. Maybe he can graduate from that with a good camp.

But based on everything he’s immature and young minded and not NFL ready when it comes to preparation.

Which is a shame because he had a huge opportunity in front of him. Sanders hurt, Javonte on a one year deal.

The thing about the NFL is everyone is fast. You run a 4.36….a linebacker or defensive end probably run a 4.45 or 4.56. You gotta have more than speed. Speed loses every week in this league and he also doesn’t play as fast as he apparently is.

I know Malik Davis probably had a bad 40 time or something happened but I mean he allegedly ran a 4.66. Plays much faster then Blue.

I don’t even know why he’ll be given another year. Cowboys waste too much time on project players and he’s already proven, as far as I’m concerned, that he can’t cut it. How much wasted time are they going to allow?
I’m sure this won’t be a popular opinion, but I really don’t care. That’s just the way I see it.

Haze, it looks to be a combination of reasons Blue isn't playing from immaturity to lack of production on field. The elevation of Malik and the signing of Abanikanda signals Blue may be put on the shelf, and try again next season.

I'm with ya.
Re-sign Williams on a reasonable 2 to 3 year deal and draft a 4th rounder.
He's a jag.
