Why not a trade for a backup QB?

Never make deals with New England. They tend to always get the best end of the deals.

What's it going to be then, eh?

If I am Dallas I avoid trading with anybody.

The last time we got the better end of a trade was probably when they picked up Terry Glenn for a song.

The Spencer trade was a win.

So was the DeMarcus Lawrence trade.

I'm sure you'll have some kind of lame comeback to try to disguise the fact you just got schooled. Hard.

Lame comeback #1 - the thread was not about draft trades.

Stop drop and roll.

Having a backup that can participate in all off-season workouts is good thing. Kellen Moore is at least ahead of the curve there with the opportunity to do that.

I'm not saying Moore is the answer at backup, but a full-offseason with more time to learn the playbook and work with Romo will help.

Of course, that didn't really help Weeden so...i'm just full of beans :)

Well, for what it's worth, I think that Weedon's game didn't really fit what we do on Offense. I think he was more suited towards a downfield scheme or a timing offense. In our offense, a lot is called for from the QB. It also didn't help that we didn't really adjust for what works for him. I do wonder how much Linehan actually trusted him?

With Moore, his game translates much better to what we do on Offense. For him, I think it's a matter of learning the offense a bit better and getting more time with our personnel. Also, Moore is Linehan's guy so you know that he will likely get more freedom and probably a little more time to develop because Linehan will not want him to fail. JMO

Wouldn't consider the Spencer trade a win the Cowboys gave up a #2, #3 and a #5 to move back into the first round to get him. That was a pretty steep price and he never lived up to expectations. He never had more than 6 sacks his first 5 seasons despite all the double teams Ware was getting. Although the Cowboys franchised him a couple of times he was never good enough for the team to commit to a long-tern deal with him. He was a solid player but never provided that second big punch to go along with Ware that the Cowboys were hoping for.

They gave up a 3rd and 5th for the swap of 27 for 36. The Eagles ended up with Kevin Kolb, Steward Bradley and C.J. Gaddis with those picks.

Considering what the Cowboys usually do with draft picks after the first two rounds I'd say that was a win.

The Cowboys didn't have a first round pick in 2007 because they traded it to Cleveland so they ended up trading away a #2, #3 and a #5 for the 26th overall pick. That's a lot to give up for a late first round pick. Had they stayed put at #36 they could have drafted Eric Weddle who went #37 to San Diego. The Cowboys had a need at safety with Roy Williams in deep decline and Weddle ended up becoming an excellent player. I don't consider the move for Spencer a win he had a great December in 2009 where it appeared he was going to take that next step and regressed the following season. He had one productive season with the Cowboys then the injuries began.

I'd rather draft a QB at #4 and move on with life.

I was just about to say the same thing. I don't know how it could be more obvious that the team should be thinking in terms of drafting a successor, not to start in 2016, but to start in about 2018, possibly earlier depending on Romo's health. If Romo stays sharp longer than I would expect (longer than about 2 years), then we have a Montana/Young situation. Not a big disaster.

I'd be willing to take a chance on Kaepernick if the 49rs are dumb enough to take the leash
off him and declare him a free agent. other than that? I am with 718 draft a QB Paxton Lynch
is scheduled to work out with the Cowboys and would be stoked if we decided to snag him
at the 4th overall pick

I did advocate Lynch at #4 we have watched as players have gone off the grid
as they say. doing well for others as we struggle to even get back into the rat
race, So take a chance got nothing to lose at this point! Romo is a walking
corpse just waiting to drop and the last thing we want? Is to see us going
down in flames without some sort of leadership at the QB spot

Dallas has really invested a lot into figuring out a suitable and draftable candidate. They only will trade for an alternative, if QB's go as RB's did last year.

With Weintz or Goff.

I'm not interested in trading for a Romo backup, only his replacement which is through the draft in early rounds, too many times over the years this franchise goes into the draft looking to fill backup or situational roles for players because they think their team is actually closer than it really is...

So, you are saying this team and s not close and we need to replace Romo before we will be close? We can't win as long as Romo is starting?

You realize, it will take 5-6 years for his replacement to even be near the understanding of defenses that Romo has, if ever?

I still believe we get the proper call against Green Bay on the Dez catch and we had a good shot of going to the SB year before last. With Romo.
