I know this has been talked about a few times on here after getting Q Will, but After reviewing this article https://www.milehighreport.com/2013/5/1/3969150/strictly-my-opinion-the-5-2-defense. i believe we have the defenses players to make the switch to a full time 5-2 to get our multi million dollar DL all working together. I think scheme wise its almost the same as 4-3 just adding a different alignment...

NT - Clark
T - Williams
T - OSA
WE - EZ
SE - Clowney or Williams

MLB - Logan Wilson
WLB - Agent 0

CB - Bland
CB - Revel Island

SS - Wilson
FS - Hooker

The only Difference is really the line. your still 4 man rush just done know whos doing what.. you still can drop 7 in coverage like Flus likes. the line stunts and shifts stay the same just out of a different starting point. i think this helps on a several fronts.

1. Run Defense, we are getting gashed out wide. will allow the linemen to do a 5v5 and allow linebackers to flow to the ball.
2. Confusion of the OL we look heavy so you think switch to a pass but then bam we hit you with some blitz package not knowing where the guys are coming from.

It's great against eh run, but teams will simply go pass heavy and then you're forced out of it because you can't cover.
i dont know about that if you drop a LB and exchange with a Big safety for TE, or a CB for a WR i think your still ok. question is do you run Single LB or drop and edge and move back to a 4-3 alignment

Because I enjoy taking shots at the guy, my instinct is to say, "because Uberfluke likes his scheme" but maybe they'll do some of it. It would probably be difficult to do it much, just because teams run some kind of spread so often.

If we had a parsons then this might work. Because he can be that hy rid DE/LB that can rush or drop I to coverage. With current t personnel you can show this on first downs to focus on stopping the run. But your pass defense will suffer specially with TEs dropping behind the LBs and suspect to crossing routes.

Should it.be in the tool.box? Yes.
Can we run it as base defense full time? No.

I think one thing we should consider is more 3-4 fronts with Osa and Williams at DE and Clark as a penetrative DT/NT although that's not his full time role. Then have Eze and Clowney (from.steong side) as OLBs. Wilson and James.and eventually overshown can be Roaming MLBs....

With Eze and Clowney at least on paper we should be able to.contain outside runs. The DL should be able to contain inside runs. It's not ideal position for Clowney specially if he is forced to drop back into coverage, but Parcells did that with Ellis and had some success. Both Eze and Clowney's job would be primarily to rush the passer.

This would also get Murray off the field who is a liability .

They've already done it.

Does anybody watch the games?

Probably 20-ish snaps in AZ games with 5 DL on the field.

They've done it some some other games. Even in game 1 vs the Eagles they played a defensive series with 5 DL.

no body is saying they have not done it... what i am saying and others is we need to do it more.

If they go 5-2 as a base defense I suppose that’s ok. But you’re still only going to be in base defense like 25% of the time.

and when they go 5 wr what are you doing?

I was saying during a game a few weeks ago they need a 5 man front of some sort.

Whether it be with a 3/4 or 5/2.

Maybe Q. Williams changes that.

The problem with all defenses is that teams on offense are a lot more versatile than they were in the past.

If a team puts 8 guys in the box on defense, the offense team will go 4 or 5 wide and beat them.

If a team plays nickle defense, the offense team will bring in extra blockers and run the ball.

Teams need a defense that can counter every type of offensive attack.

To win though, they need each player to do their their jobs and win their battles, both of which the Cowboys have struggled to do this season on defense.
