Why not cut Mayle and activate Rico for this week?

I know Mayle plays ST, but why not activate Rico this week and run a small package of plays for him? Serves three purposes: 1) keeps other teams with nothing to play for from poaching him from our PS. 2) with a package of plays for Rico, gives opponent's defensive coordinators tape of one more skill player to worry about. 3) Finally, you can never have too many big players in the playoffs. Even if he can only block "a little", how nice would it be to run him out there as our third TE on short yardage, along with Collins/Looney? At least we would not be completely tipping our hand that we are 100% running. Gathers can at least catch the ball. I just don't see Mayle being worth a roster spot, and activating Rico is the kind of "bold move" that could pay off big in the playoffs.

Key words... "block a little."

I don't get to see what others see, so I have to rely on what people report who also have not seen anything but know people who have...

Suffice it to say, I'm all for it if that's what Red decides is best.

It's unfair to the rest of the league.

We have Swaim and Gathers backing up Witten next year. I suspect a rule change will be in place to prevent that.

Too late for this.

Also, the special teams thing is a huge factor. Mayle is good at covering. Can Rico offer anything on Special Team?

Rico has to take Escobars spot.

I'm itching to see Rico

I am too but most teams don't bring untested players onto the roster for the playoffs. Mayle is good special teamer.

Isn't Rico on a three-year contract? I don't think teams can poach him, but I concede I don't know the particulars of PT rules.

Dallas is paying him like he is on the active roster so he won't be poached.

Any team can poach a player on the practice squad

And yes, it would be bold to bring in an untested player, especially one as inexperienced as Rico. But he has been practicing all year, and apparently doing well. And Im suggesting just a limited group of plays for him.

He's getting paid an insane amount to be on the practice squat (basically getting same money as Anthony Brown), teams can't really offer higher pay or a better situation (winning team with aging starting TE)

Yes, but the risk of a week 17 "poaching" is very real because if a team signs him to their active roster, he must be paid a MINIMUM of 3 weeks' game checks. This would likely exceed what he is making here for his final week on the practice squad.

No one is poaching a guy being paid what he's being paid and hasn't played football since high school
He will be a project for a couple years if he ever developes

Why would a practice squad player leave a team in the playoffs to go to a non-playoff team when they won't draw any money from their new team up until the final 53 is set after camp? It makes no sense.

Mayle has served his purpose well. He blocks and is very good on ST. Why tinker now?

Swaim is a beast, and is going to be the reason the Cowboys do not draft a TE next year.

Who was that undrafted free agent linebacker a few years ago that was the talk of this message board who didn't make the team and quickly was out of the league?

Oh yeah, Adrian Hamilton.

Such will be Rico Gathers.
