Why not tag Demarco Murray?

Saving it for Dez I'm pretty sure.

That, and you'd end up paying him double what you want to pay this season for the privilege. But the real reason is you want the threat of the franchise to give some limit to the Dez discussions.

The ceiling for what i'd want to pay him is well below the tag value for a RB.

I think most of us would agree that the Cowboys would like to retain the option of using the Franchise Tag on Dez Bryant if it should be needed. If they can't reach an agreement with Demarco Murray on a long term contract how do you feel about using the Transition Tag? It's one year value is less expensive than the franchise tag. It also gives Demarco the ability to go out and test the market. If he gets a contract offer the Cowboys have 7 days to decide if they want to match it or let him walk.

It's because even the transition tag is too much money committed to the player.

4 years, 20 mil is about the max.

I get what you're saying, but here's what I am thinking. Demarco's value on the market will probably never be higher, meaning that it's unlikely he will end up playing for one year at the Transition Tag price. If he comes back to earth and has an average year or gets injured he has lost his leverage. It's more likely that he signs a longer deal somewhere right? Strike while the iron is hot? It gives us the advantage of letting the market determine his value, and then we can decide whether to match his offer or determine that he is being overpaid and let him walk.

Here's the transition tag cost for backs in 2014: $8.033 million

He's simply not worth that kind of coin and I sure as heck wouldn't want him to leap on that offer and take the transition tag.

I understand that there is a risk, but I seriously doubt that he settles for 8ish million and risks injury or a mediocre season when someone out there is going to offer him a deal with higher guaranteed dollars for multiple years. If we feel the deal is unreasonable we let him walk and it doesn't cost a dime. On the other hand if the deal is affordable we can match within 7 days.

His production is actually worth that much. It about whether or not he can reproduce it for 2-3 more years.

The fretting over this guy's imminent departure is somewhat entertaining.

Give him your offer (no more than $5 mil/year)

Let him test the market.

If he gets a better offer and signs elsewhere wish him luck and move forward as an organization.

If the grass isn't greener on the other side welcome him back with open arms and sell me that #29 I've been waiting to buy.

His production in 2014 was worth that amount.

His production in 2015 probably won't be... And you have to pay him on future productivity and not what was done previously.

The franchise tag isn't a terrible option (it's not a great one, either). Yeah, it's a lot of money in 2015, but it leaves no out-year obligation, and that's the key to effective cap management. At ~$10M, it's a clear overpayment, so you're only going to do it if you're all in for 2015, or if there's no better way to spend that money this year (i.e. no big name FA that you want or that agrees to sign with you).

Signing a contract that sticks you with dead money in future years is much worse than overpaying a guy this year.

I have no problem paying him 8.033 million for one more year......if that's gonna be the going rate. Then let him walk.
