Why not tag Demarco Murray?

I understand that there is a risk, but I seriously doubt that he settles for 8ish million and risks injury or a mediocre season when someone out there is going to offer him a deal with higher guaranteed dollars for multiple years. If we feel the deal is unreasonable we let him walk and it doesn't cost a dime. On the other hand if the deal is affordable we can match within 7 days.

It's not just the Cowboys who devalue the RB position - it's the entire NFL. Murray isn't going to get that kind of offer from anyone. The franchise tag is worth 2X what anyone else wiill offer him, and the transition tag isn't going to be that much less. I think it's highly possible we see Demarco resign with Dallas for 4 years/$20M ($15M guaranteed) or so, simply because I don't think anyone will offer him any more than that.

The franchise tag isn't a terrible option (it's not a great one, either). Yeah, it's a lot of money in 2015, but it leaves no out-year obligation, and that's the key to effective cap management. At ~$10M, it's a clear overpayment, so you're only going to do it if you're all in for 2015, or if there's no better way to spend that money this year (i.e. no big name FA that you want or that agrees to sign with you).

Signing a contract that sticks you with dead money in future years is much worse than overpaying a guy this year.

People don't want to pay for Suh, they don't want to pay for Murray, they think JPP and Hardy will be cheap. If we don't spend any money, what good is having cap space?

I would rather overpay Murray for a year and keep him than have to count on Randle and a draft pick.

I was against it at first but if they get Dez signed to an extension tagging Murray allows us to draft a RB in any round and see if we get a keeper.

I think it was Strum that wrote the article about high carries RB's and the following
year generally was low production mostly.Murray is a high character guy and a solid runner
but there is some things other then dollars to be considered here.

He is also in his absolute prime and has a tremendous work ethic. If there was anyone to dispel the Curse of 370 carries I think it would be a guy that trains in MMA in the off-season for fun.

Emmitt had over 360 carries 4 times in his first 6 years and I don't remember anyone calling for his release.Murray just broke Smith's single season record and has a lot less wear on his legs than Emmitt had.

We can't tag Murray because it will be used on Dez. Using the tag on Murray would cost more than the budget will allow.

Dez can signed to an extension and his cap number will be much lower than the 12m+ if tagged

Murray can then be Transition tagged for 8m+. There is plenty of space to do both and sign the other FAs.

As I've already said, the Jones's don't seem to be willing to spend that much on one RB. He was offered 4m/yr and I don't think they will offer much more. Ryan Williams was a higher draft pick the same year Murray was drafted and he won't cost near as much.
