Lol, your friend lost me when he said Orel Hershiser. The rest of those accolades pale in comparison to the house that Ruth built and it is gone, enough said IMO.

The fact he compared it to the pyramids and the Taj Mahal is what got me...Like, c'mon, did you really write that? Lol

He's a cool dude, even though he's a diehard Texans fan.

Yea, if he thought Orel played for the Astros(he did not), I just glanced over the rest. Saw the pyramids and Taj mentioned and laughed. Surprised he didn't mention the many high school games played there or the destruction derby's :)

It's too bad, the Astrodome is actually a pretty big deal historically (more for architectural reasons of course). I think it could easily be deemed a historical landmark, but unfortunately it's just so darn big that you can't just let it sit there.

I agree it Astrodome was the world's first multi-purpose, domed sports stadium.

To be fair, Prop 2 proposed that the Astrodome be converted into a 350k, pillar-free conference center that could host things like the X-Games, Indy racing and act as a fan center for Texans games. It was a pretty interesting concept, albeit an expensive one.

told my coworker yesterday when talking about it "it would be one thing if 5 superbowls and 10 world series were won there....but nothing has ever been won there"

Nothing offical yet but yesterdays vote is likely the nail in the coffin for the old girl.

I have to say that is kind of sad. That stadium was iconic in it's day. Still could be I think but then I'd be spending other people's tax money.

I have mixed feeling on the subject. In the end unless someone is willing to put in the funds to renovate and put the stadium into use there is no need to continue spending tax payer money to keep it up.

Someone will save it or it will just become part of the parking lot at Reliant complex

I personally hope it is saved. I can't say why because I have no dog in that fight but it does symbolize Houston in many ways.

Maybe because my head is spinning from all my dad's recent recollections to me of Bum Phillips!

A bigger symbol of Houston is NASA in which one of the real Space Shuttles should have went to
I drive by there everyday only to see a replica and it angers me :(

Yeah part of me feels the same way, It was the frist of it's kind and has meant a lot over the years to the people of Houston. I have gone to all kinds of events including some great concerts. The other part of me sees it as a money pit that is just sitting there and costing the people of Harris County money

The Astrodome is not an icon. Anyone slinging rocks about it being more important than another stadium just lacks any sense of self awareness.

Wish I had some good info, but one thing seems obvious. The building will require maintenance and suck money down the drain, and it's just not that important.

We're not talking about a historical landmark or even one of the great sporting venues in the history of American Sports.

It's not Fenway. It's not Yankees stadium (which was demolished, even with the infinitely richer history than the Astrodome), it's not Wrigley. It's not even the Superdome.

Now that I think about it, it's almost embarrassing to hold on to something like that. Something that means so little in the grand scheme of things. Is the Astrodome the only thing to have pride in when it comes to the sports history of Houston? If so, that's just sad.

Knock it down, and build a statue of Hakeem the Dream to the same scale of the Statue of Liberty.

Um, no offense, but haven't you said you're mid-20s or so? I think you just don't appreciate how special it was for its time. I'm not even old enough to remember that and I'm a lot older than you. But in its day it was a true architectural and engineering marvel. It wasn't just the place where the Oilers and Astros played.
