Why the big hurry to sign Ware?

He still has a year left in his contract... 2010 might be a uncapped year.. You could sign him next year. Pay his bonus all at once and not kill the cap when it does come back.. This year we don't have much cap room for any free agents.. I don't know if this is allowed under the current labor contract... I know Ware deserves every cent he gets but he seems to want Ray Ray here this could help...

It might be slightly cheaper to sign him this year. Ware is a great player and a great character guy. You never want your best players disgruntled in a contract year. Were going to have to pay him, why prolong it.

Either way, we will have an opportunity to hold his rights at the end of next season. Either he will be a Restricted Free Agent due to the CBA rules with no cap, or we can place the Franchise Tag on him.

So why the big push to sign him now? I rather sign another player who you want to keep on the team like Canty or Spears and then franchise or sign Ware next year..

From my understand a lot of teams are trying to take care of business this year. I don't think the upcap season will mean a free for all at least that is the sense I'm getting from other teams. So the idea of waiting and spend like crazy next year I don't think it is going to work like that.

Spears' contract is not up yet. In fact, I think he falls under the same contract as Ware, in terms of length.

Because he's your best player on defense and one of your top 3 best players on the team and you take care of those guys first.

Firstly, signing top quality players of our own is a must. Especially guys like Ware. He is high character, hard working, well spoken and above all the best defensive player in the game today.

Secondly the price will go up next year. It always does. And if we leave it until next year ,he becomes a FA, even if we tag him i would guess 31 other teams would gladly give up 2 first round picks to have him on their team.

We need to sign this guy NOW!!!! Before Haynesworths new contract gets out of hand. Make Ware the best paid player now.

Another excellent point and reason for getting the deal done.

as I said in another thread i don't care if we sign anyone in FA, but Ware is priority to me.

The price is only going up. Even if he breaks his leg in game 1, God forbid, the price will only go up. If he gets anywhere near 20 sacks again it will go up astronomically and to the point we could lose him. Is Harrison = Ware? Haynesworth?? I don't think so.

Strategically, you do it because there is an incentive for him to take a slight discount this year, to get paid a year early. We are the only team that has the right to negotiate with him now. If he wants the money, NOW, he can only get it from us.

Since most contracts are not fully guaranteed in football, if he waits a year and hits free agency, he runs the risk of suffereing a career threatening injury during the final year of the contract. By signing an extension a year early, he takes that risk away to a large degree. That incentive helps get a player signed. If he is a free agent, that risk is not a factor anymore.

Next year, after the season, as he approaches free agency, he knows that in a very short period of time that other teams will be biddding for his services, so there is an incentive to wait the team out and see what is out there in free agency.

Good god. This is simple. Best player on the team. Perhaps the best defensive player in the league.

You lock that up. You don't try to play games with him.
