Why the Cowboys Should Seriously Consider a 34 Defense

Well, this is the issue, we don’t have one linebacker. Where are we going to get five from?
Simple we draft 1 and get one or two thru free agency. We can get two very good linebackers via free agency that fit the 3-4 and draft a linebacker like Sonny Styles. Plus we have Ezaraku that can be converted to a 3-4 linebacker.

I'm hoping that we get Quay Walker and Quincy Williams via free agency. That will solve our linebacker issues.

Steelers starting NT is like 305
In an ideal 3-4 defense of today, I think the NT would be at least 330 LBS.

And being the a NT in the 26th ranked defense this season is hardly ideal.

But I understand your point. It is a combination of size and strength that creates the force needed. A successful NT doesn't necessarily have to fit the ideal weight if they have a larger share of strength.

It's a difficult subject to quantify. The use of 3-4 defenses were at their Hight in the late 80's when the players were somewhat smaller than their counterparts of today. Anybody over 300 was rare.

From 1980 to 1989 the NFL drafted 4 DTs weighing 300 or more that started at least 48 games during their careers. From 1990 to 1999 that number rose to 36.

With today's O-lineman weighing around 310 apiece it was just my opinion that an ideal NT of today would weigh around 350 with the belt size of a bear.

I get it, I would want to bring in a 325lb dude or two…..but I think Kenny Clark played NT is first few years at GB….i think with Q, Clark, OSA, Solomon Thomas and a couple big bodies (Toia looking blah) and the DL would be set, just need to get some more backers. I’m really just intrigued of what we could do with various LB rush packages with a good 3-4 coach. Last year Overshown blitzed a few times and he was in the backfield as quick as Micah was….he might be a rushing asset from the inside LB position with a good coach. At this point, we don’t have any really good 4-3 DE at all, EZ is small for a DE and might be better as an OLB. I mean we can’t get no worse lol.

Get me Leonhard as DC and let’s light this candle. Draft Styles and another LB or FS in the first round and yabba dabba do it.

Your coach can also look for some FA talent that will fit this defense.

Overshown could play OLB on the strong side. His length and movement would be ideal there.
