Why we didn't get a receiver

If Austin spends a few hours in front of the JUGS machine or with TRomo everyday learning how to catch, he will be dynamic. He was constantly open last year. The problem was that the ball didn't come to him or he choked when he did. IF he gets his hands together, I think he could be amazing. That is a big IF tho.

From all reports, Stanback was wowing them at practice last year. I believe the only reason that he wasn't out there on game day is that the coaches didn't want to get him shell shocked and to let him add some nfl muscle to his frame (this can be seen by how quickly he got hurt).

Hurd isn't as fast as Austin but has better hands. Remember him, Stanback, and Austin are still learning the NFL receiver position and should be MUCH better this season. If Hurd can keep his hands and learn how to run his routes to get seperation from the defender then we will be good as well. Hurd reminds me of Crayton but still learning the route running.

Crayton is still good guys. I was just as p.o.'d as everyone else about him towards the end of last year BUT he still has the best hands in the NFL and I promise you he won't live down giving up on what would have been the game winning touchdown. He'll be better this reason if only for that.

T.O. is phenomenal. I never thought I'd hear that from myself when he came here but there... I said it. The fact of the matter is, tho, that he is older and probably will get hurt. If our luck is good that won't be the case but...
With him mentoring the younger guys, them getting better, and the addition of Felix as a rb coming to the slot, and don't forget our 4.4 TE - Hannah that can come out wide as well, I think that Jerry believes we will be o.k. Truth be told, I like our chances as well. Every team has an area of concern but with this group I'm no longer sure that receiver is ours.

Have a great day and GO COWBOYS! :starspin

They may get better but I don't see any of them as legit #1 or #2 starters in the NFL. Obviously we don't know about Stanbach but we'll find out some things in TC. As for Austin, we've hand too many WRs over the years who've had good speed but couldn't consistently catch the ball. Wait and see if Austin ever becomes the WR we hope he can be. Another player we'll know a lot more about in TC/preseason games.

In the playoff game he dropped a possible td pass.

I'll be surprised if he even makes the team this year.

In the same Giant game that we all kill Crayton on, Austin was coming across the middle while Tony was scrambling and the ball hit him dead in the hands and he dropped it. He was wide open in the middle of the field and had a very good chance of taking it to the house but he couldn't hang on to it. I remember because I've been rooting for him all year and then when his big chance came he blew it! I'm still rooting for him but his hands have GOT to get better. He's better than some of the other blazing fast receivers that have been here in the past in that he does get seperation but along with that he has to catch. Hope he does better this year because I think we are going to need him.

Ah yes.... he has to get a pass on that one... it was a playoff game and he hardly played at WR - unless there is more evidence he cant play?

but thats it?

A few opp's... he gets PI'd and drops one and he is done?

Good point. But it really does seem that no NFL teams considered any of the WRs in this year's draft to be that either...or they would have picked them in Round 1. Now maybe a few will turn out to be #1s--- maybe Hardy ends up like Plaxico or something. We'll see.

In response to you and Yeager: If his hands get better he will make the team and he would be a legit #1 or #2. He is FAST and he was almost always open. Tony just didn't have any trust in him. Remember the 2nd Giants game: He was interfered with once near the endzone because the defender was beat but it wasn't called. Then the exact same thing happened later and it was called and we scored a TD off of that to help us win. I'm telling you guys go back and look. He was open a lot. If he can just get his hands better we will have a dynamite receiver. Don't just take my word, if you have the games recorded, go back and look. I think you will agree with me. :D

IMHO we did not draft a wr because we will get Roy Williams next yr once his contract is up. Then we can draft a wr in next yrs draft provided the draft has #1 wrs available.

We seem to be drafting toward the strength of the draft. 2006 we went after OL in 2007 we went after CB and RB. 08 might be the yr for wr(free agent and draft).

We can't be reaching because of need anymore (best player available for our systems).

Hurd is a better wr and from all accounts the staff is very high on Stanback. I hope he sticks around. I like him but he has to show something other than one kickoff return.

Bring in Amendola and let's see what he can do. I have a feeling that Romo may take an instant liking to this guy. He might become a valuable slot receiver for us.

The wildcard here is TGlenn and his health. If he comes back and stays healthy...what a big if huh...then we should be stacked at WR. The one thing we can't do is keep him if he does get injured for more than a couple games like we did last year. He and Romo had no rapport with each other and it showed.

Miles needs to take a big step forward this year or I believe he'll be gone. I would love for him to do so but I have my doubts. I don't know if Hurd has the ability to consistently get open. Both of these guys are going to have to work to make the final roster.

Unless you were physically at the games there is no way you can say that he was always open. Nfl cameras rarely show the field from that angle for you to make that claim period.

Very good posts, starfrombirth. YoMick is right. Austin has had very little experience playing wide out in the NFL while in Dallas, and he came from a very small program. Hurd has been in the game more, and done fairly well.

Dallas didn't draft a wide out because it didn't need one, at least not one available in this draft. And if Austin and Stanback do well this season, you may be throwing rocks at the Lions' Roy Williams next off season.

If Glenn shows us something that could be the last WR roster spot. Should Austin make the final 53 this year he better do something. Next year I expect a big influx of new WR's.

Agreed.

And saying we didn't draft a WR in part because of Austin is making me contemplate murder.

Teams always blow smoke after the draft. If Sweed had been there at 61, we'd have drafted him. I'm sure if someone we loved fell to us later in the draft, we'd have drafted them, too.

It's not like we determined before the draft that we absolutely weren't drafting a WR. We just didn't reach for one just to get one, and that's a good thing.

You don't go to Red Lobster and order the burger--this year's draft had no NFL ready WRs, so why order one?

Against the G-Men, we ran a playaction that had Romo roll out. The play was dialed up perfect because their secondary was absolutely gassed, Austin sprinted directedly by his guy in the slot and was wide open for 6. Protection broke down, and Romo got sacked.

If Romo has time and hits Austin, we are all singing a very different tune. Our receiver production wasn't the problem down the stretch last year, it was stopping every team's 3rd receiver.

I'm content going into next season with our group, but we'll definitely need a youth movement in 09.
