Why we need a young, new thinking DC, not an old one

The Dallas Cowboys need a DC who thinks differently, is more aggressive, can relate well to younger players and brings fresh concepts to our defense. We need that kind of DC a lot more than another DC everyone has heard of, but whose best days are in the past.

I agree with the above. And honestly, I don't care how old he is if he has those traits. Let's not "age discriminate". LOL

My question is why would he come here instead of more normally ran franchises?

Unless of course he’s had no other offers.
A coach worth his salt will know Jerry's version of team building and decline.

A has-been or shoddy coach, looking to just get a paycheck or build a resume and move on will take this job.

McCarthy and Schottenheimer say hold our beers

Look, I can't start fancy threads like Bob but the guy we need to coach our defense will be the guy we hire to do it. I don't understand why people can't accept this.

Amen. Trust “the process”. I mean having the wisdom and experience of our 83 year old GM should give us all a level of confidence other teams wish they had.

IMO, the Dallas Cowboys need a young, talented, innovative, up and coming Defensive Coordinator that brings new and aggressive thinking to one of the least talented defensive rosters in the entire NFL.

There are many reasons why. But I will start with the fact that other than Dan Quinn, all of the last 6 DCs we’ve hired have been older, more “established names” who used concepts that were tried and true and had been used in the NFL a long time. Those men were Monte Kiffin, Rod Marinelli, Mike Nolan, Dan Quinn, Mike Zimmer and Matt Eberflus.

The average age of our last 6 DCs when they were in Dallas was…62 years old. And that’s with a 51 year old Dan Quinn (at the time) in the mix. He was a baby compared to the others.

Now we as fans typically love the old “name hire”. Somebody we’ve all heard of who may (or may not) have had some success in the past. Everyone likes hiring someone we’ve heard of because it makes us think they can repeat what they’ve done in the past.

What we rarely hear about are young rising assistant coaches who are much more in tune with today’s players and much more willing to try new ideas.

Look at Houston’s HC DeMeco Ryans. He just turned 41 and has been a HC in Hou three years now. Look at their great defense. He was a young up and coming assistant at SF where he coached LBs a couple of years, then became the niners DC and they were great under his leadership.

I’m not knocking “experienced” DCs, but I believe our future will be best handled by a coach with upside rather than a past.

Please…no more old retreads we’ve all heard of.
It's not just "old" DC's. It old coaches, period. Just look at Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll. The game has passed these guys by. Old school coaching does not work anymore. The problem with the Cowboys has been Jerry Jones refusing to step into the future. His way of doing things no longer works, and hasn't for years.

I’m all for some up and coming youngblood. But unfortunately they prob won’t stay long as will be sought after with any success.

Regardless we must have an insert of talent for any to have success. Coaching alone won’t get it done. NFL is a talent driven league.
Thats called a good problem. We need more of them.

Who taught you how to bold like that, Mary? You cheating on me with this hater?

A pretty decent coach came from the college ranks and did a pretty fair job for us in the early 90s........and that was a HC which requires an executive type task. DC just has to handle part of the team
That HC was hired by a different Jerry. The one that said “winning is the only thing” at his presser after buying the team. Today's Jerry is about comfort, relevancy and control.

I dont disagree, I was just pointing out the facts about Jones. And in the past Idve argued that's an outlier more than the normal simply because they are no longer dealing with poor college kids but multi millionaires. But with NIL that's rapidly changing.

Id support a DC with DC experience from college ranks.

great post. NFL changes, if you don't you go by the way side, so older DCs tend to rely back on their experience of what worked and they often try to mold players into their system. see Eberflus...younger ones tend to be more experimintal, take a little bit of this, little bit of that and throw something new. smart ones. good ones find success. NFL rules have changed. so offenses have changed and thus defenses have to adjust. are a lot of the defenses variations of the old systems? yes, Minn. flores runs a cover 0. reminds me of Ryan in Chicago with the 4-6 defense. its a variation. pressure. bring it fast. hit hard.

and defense wins championships. 12 of the top 15 defensive teams are in the playoffs. notably Minn. and KC in top 10 didn't make it, but KC went 15-2 last year with their offense scoring 30 points once.... this year the offense was just to pathetic (no balance). Minn. just missed playofs and was 9-8....

until we fix oru defense. until we find some innovative DC this team has no chance, no matter how good the offense is.

Who do you think you are? Risen? There’s only room for 1 Risen on this board.

but that's the goal. hire them. benefit for a couple of years, if they get hired as Head coaches, it means the did great for us. its the cycle.
its better than couple of years of crap with the likes of zimmer and eberflus.

The problem with this is the risk of another 1 and done DC. Some stability is needed on the D. These guys can't keep trying to learn a new system every year. They don't even seem to grasp a current scheme during year 1.

If they can find someone who can be here a couple years, and impart the same scheme to another younger coach, great. The Jones boys don't seem to grasp that concept unless it's on offense.
exactly, but its also crappy systems. Quinn left. for a head coaching position. can't do much about that. but zimmer. sucked. and eberflus was even worse....the right hire, brings stability.

Once again, you're spot on, BH. A new approach with fresh ideas will go a long way to solving the defensive woes present in Dallas for years, and will energize the players AND fans.

You can't start fancy threads like Bob???

I thought there wasn't anything Daniel Day-Lewis couldn't do.

This is a nightmare! Someone wake me up by cutting off My Left Foot!

Eh, I can just as easily say when you have an aging QB and several other big contracts on veteran players now is not the time to gamble on inexperience. You need someone who can hit the ground running.

There is no one right answer to this. It has to do with the individual.
