More grist for the anti-Norv mill.
Charlotte, N.C.: What is your opinion on the hiring of Norv Turner? Marty may struggle in the playoffs, but he can make the playoffs?
Michael Wilbon: Norv Turner is as honorable a man as you can meet in sports. He's a great assistant coach, either coordinating a defense or tutoring quarterbacks, which is critical to any football team's success. But in eight or nine years as a head coach he's 24 games under .500. He's been completely unsuccessfully as a head coach in two stops -- Commanders and Raiders -- and primarily because he's proven to be terrible at dealing with conflict, with discipline, with motivating players. Maybe the Chargers think that post-Marty, with all the discipline already installed, Norv can Xs and Os them, sort of soft-land them back in the playoffs. It'll be interesting to see. His shortcomings are known to every player in the league. Players talk openly about his inability to motivate, or tell stories of him turning over his pre-game speeches to assistants who are better speakers. That, from what I hear from veteran and former NFL players, is never ever going to work.
