This is a question thats has been killing me for some time now. I know that the Cowboys have official not retired any number, but I wanted to know what will the status be on 22 and 8. Nobody has used them ever since. I know 88 was has been used since Irvin, but will they ever officialy retire 8 and 22?

Any comments?

No, the long standing policy of the Cowboys is not to retire jersey's. I doubt anyone ever wears those numbers again.. but you never know.

I think this question got brought up back in training camp when we saw someone wearing #74.

If i remember correctly they will not retire any numbers, but there are certain numbers that will never be worn. I know that 22 and 8 are two of them, and i think that #12 is another one, i don't remember if there are others.

I am sure someone else could clarify if I am right on this.

Nobody wears them because they dont want to? Or because the organization does not allow it?

I mean Emmitt All time NFL rushing leader!!! Making 22 a retired number just for him would be worthy of his accomplishments dont you think?

Also, mind my asking, what is the difference if they dont retire numbers but nobody can wear them?
Good point btw.. I dont recall anyone ever wearing 12 again.

The Cowboys will not retire any numbers, not even Emmitt Smith's. If I remember right, when Troy Aikman was drafted some wanted him to use #12 and Roger approved of it if Troy Wanted it. Troy opted to keep 8. I imagine the same courtesy is offered to Emmitt. I know in Training Camps the numbers could possibly be used as Bob Lilly's was by Canty. I think when final cuts are made you will always see 74, 12, 22, and 8 unoccupied for the season. I don't see this changing any time soon, and I like it that way. Don't retire the numbers.

All I know is if I were a player I wouldn't wear those numbers out of pure respect. Then again not everyone who signs with the Cowboys is a die-hard Cowboy fan.

It is good to know. What brings me to a doubt is that 88 was used, but then agian, Irvin was good, but never as good as Aikman or Emmit. So I guess that makes sense.

IIRC Julius Jones used 22 in college right? But when he got to the cowboys he got 21! Correct me if I am wrong!

Those numbers are some times used in TC but once the regular season starts they change the number.

Brett Pierce was the last player I saw wearing #88 but he's on IR.

Eventually a kicker will come along and will wear the #8.

I really hope that never happens! And I seriously doubt they will let him.:mad::mad:

to me they are just numbers till you put a name on it...

some of us remember another great #22 or 54 , 88 etc...

I also remember some obscure cowboys who had numbers like 21( Doug Dennison anyone... )

so no don't retire the number retire the name instead:)

In training camp the team has some 80+ players and it would be difficult if not all numbers are used. Once the regular season starts and the roster is trimmed to 53, it would be a lot easier to save certain numbers like 8,12,22 and 74

Like you said some of the great numbers have been used a few times. Don't forget #33 or #43. Newman may be adding to the minor legacy of #41.

Or how about #17? :lmao:

74 will be issued in TC, because of a numbers game...however, will not be issued during the regulat season.

8,12, 22, 74 will not be issued for regular season.

You are right...actually those are the only numbers that has never been reissued to another player

#74...Bob Lilly HOF
#12...Roger Staubauch HOF
#8 Troy Aikman HOF
#22 Emmit Smith Future HOF

Although HOFers #33 Tony Dorsett and #54 Randy White has been reissued before.

Bobby Carpenter is currently using #54, is he not? I recall some controversy on this board regarding that very issue. Perhaps, in time, some of those numbers will be used again, but not for quite a while.
