Will Danny Amendola be the next Jimmy Smith?

A lot of people laughed and made jokes when comparing Danny Amendola to Wes Welker when he was here with Dallas, now he is replacing Welker at New England. Is this going to be Jimmy Smith all over again! I hated seeing Jimmy Smith with the Jaguars making all those plays when he should of been doing it for us! I guess you can't be right about all of them, I wish we could of kept Danny Amendola here in Dallas.

The Cowboys didn't let Amendola go. He was on their practice squad for the whole season. The eagles made the playoffs and because of a loophole they were allowed to poach him on to their practice squad for the playoffs. He was technically a free agent once the season was over is the excuse.

Jimmy Smith left the Cowboys to become a borderline HOF player. Although Danny is good, I don't think the HoF will ever be a possibility for him after his career.

So no

he didn't have the big butt or speed jerruh likes, so we cut him.

the last 17 years of jerruh reminds me of the final 3-4 years of al davis

If we wanted him we could have paid him in free agency. Nothing to regret...

If he wanted he could have chosen not to sign up with Philly's practice squad. He chose to leave.

I thought he got claimed as soon as we moved him to the PS. I don't think he spent any time with us.

edit: you are correct.

The rules are so incredibly slanted toward receivers now that even a no-talent shrimp like Amendola can succeed.

No, I gotta say we screwed up there. We had him and everybody could see that he could catch, that he ran routes well and that he worked hard. We never should have put him on the PS IMO.

We kept guys like Stanbeck and Hurd and guys that weren't WRs and we just made a mistake there. Hind Sight is 20/20, I get that, but seems like everybody thought this kid was a keeper but for whatever reason, we kept these others on the active roster and not him.

I don't blame him. We kept some guys that he probably felt like he was better then. We had Owens, Crayton, Austin and Williams on the roster. He probably looked at the situation and figured, the club doesn't have enough confidence in me to make the 53 and if I go PS, I can be claimed by anybody. In Philly, they had Kevin Curtis, Jason Avant, Hank Basket, Reggie Brown, Greg Lewis and DeSean Jackson. I mean, he probably figured his chances of making the team with Philly were better.

In 2008, Dallas needed back up wide receivers that could also play special teams. They had plenty of guys who could go out and catch passes that year. He couldn't play special teams at that time. He was struggling as a return man, which was supposed to be his strength and he was not built for coverage teams. They wanted to keep him around to develop. He need time in the weight room. You can't do that by keeping him on the 53. That is what the PS is all about. I think it was a good move on Dallas part. If he was so valued back then he would have been drafted in the first place. They were more than willing to bring him back in 2009, but he chose to leave. There was no point in offering him a lot of money at that point to stick around.

Oh, I don't agree at all. We had Miles who did play STs. We had Crayton who was gone the next year. We had Owens who was basically in the same boat. We had a couple of project guys who couldn't catch the ball. You don't keep WRs who can't catch in order to play STs. You keep WR who can catch and who can play STs so I don't really agree with that angle.

It was easy to see that he could catch and run routes. You say that they wanted to keep him around as a return man and I can understand that but if you got a guy who can actually play, why would you not put that guy on the 53 and designate one of these other guys who could not play to the 53? The only WR that contributed for the Cowboys for any length of time, that made the team is Miles. All the rest were gone in a short time or never panned out. Clearly, Philly believed he could play and they were right. I understand developing players and the PS but I think it was clear that we made a mistake and the team basically said the same. They thought they could hide him on the PS but that didn't happen and now, he's a pretty decent football player playing for somebody else.

I think it was a mistake.

Has it gotten so bad we are now crying over a crappy WR we lost years ago?

Face it people, WR has not been a problem with this team.

Add this to the list for the moaners and groaners.

Also hasn't he had major injuries in each of the last two seasons?

I thought that meant he was injury prone round these parts.

Or is that label only applied to Dallas Cowboy players?

Obviously, you know zilch about Jimmy Smith's time here, or his road to Jacksonville.
