Will Irving be a full-time LDE?

If the Tampa Bay game is any indication, Irving could be a premier LDE. I know the coaching staff loves DLs with versatility and moving them around, but I really think Irving could break out if left at LDE full-time and could fully focus on the technique for that position. Thoughts on what the staff will/should do?

"Full time" has an unknown definition these days. D-lineman are constantly shuffled in and out. No d-lineman plays every snap. As for position, I like him at LDE. But if you want your 4 best players on the field, he may be better at DT in passing situations. I think it would depend on how Crawford, Thornton and Collins rush from their DT spots.

The amount of snaps he gets will depend on how effective he is when he's on the field. We saw last year that he can be very disruptive at times. He just needs to be more consistent.

There will be lots of experimenting in training camp at various positions. Part of that will be where Irving will lining up in certain situations.

If only he could face Cherilus every game I'd be in favor of this.

I thought the same thing awhile back, friend.

He is good at both LDE and 3-tech DT. Also, he was really good at the Zero-tech when they played a 3-man line. He went around several Centers like their feet were in concrete. He would have done it again in the playoff game against Green Bay but the OL wrapped his arm around Irving's neck.

The more sacks you rack up, the more you get to play. Mirinelli has no problem letting you play "full time" with the occasional relief from a second string guy if you're talented. See Simenon rice and warren sapp. They played a lot.

I would think the plan would be to rotate Charlton and Mayowa at right end and Irving and Lawrence at left end, although I could see Lawrence getting some playing time at RDE and Irving getting some at DL, especially if Tapper figures into the end rotation.

Irving is a matchup guy imo. Just play him at whatever position gives us the advantage from week to week.

I like him better in the middle but he was unreal against Tampa.
This is how I see it. I want to see him get more time at DE than inside, but he should attack the opposing Oline's weakness every week. That's what teams usually do with star pass rushers like Von Miller, except usually those guys aren't big enough to play inside. Irving with his size and insane length gives Marinelli the ability to play him wherever the offense is most vulnerable.

You could probably count the number of DL on this team that have been given "full time" positions on one finger.

I am personally not a proponent of the "everyone has multiple positions" approach, whether that be DL or DB, but it doesn't seem to be something that's going to change anytime soon.

I believe in giving young guys one position to learn, and if they prove some level of competence then you let them master it. If not, then you start looking for other ways to use them.

Knowing Marinelli, Taco will have to earn a starting spot. That's only going to come with production. Unless he simply wows everybody in TC and preseason, he'll start the season as part of a later rotation.

If ONE game is any indication? Since when is ONE game only any indication? I am hopeful for Irvin, but where was he in the Greenbay game? He was a ghost.

In my opinion, our best hope going forward would be for Tapper to bust out at LDE and Taco to bust out at RDE. Irvin with his flexibility can come in and rotate in at just about every position but 3 Tech tackle. And on passing downs he can play tackle. Unless the guy becomes a beast and is more consistent.
