I understand what he is saying, I think we all do, or should. However when may lose 4 players in the secondary, and still need major upgrades on the DL. Still may need a LB or two.
And they will not be active in the FA market, other than getting the same type of players we may lose....you better be drafting defense, as the only thing we need on the offensive side is a future RT and a WR opposite of Dez.

Defense dude, defense......unless we resign more than half of our FA's on D...draft defense....

They may prefer it to fall a certain way, but losing teams force picks.
Say there are 5 players that they like still left at 28 and for some freak reason all of them are offensive players.
Well, they either take the offensive player they like best or trade down. You sure don't take a defensive player you have graded as mid 2nd rounder there. That's would be Cleveland doing that stuff.

My guess is that there WILL be a defensive player or two that they like...just depends on how much.

Really, this is the smart way to build a team. If, when our pick is due, the best player is an offensive player, you take him. Don't force picks. That's how your team and talent gradually erodes. Conversely, you see that our team all of a sudden jumped up and won the NFC East. That's due to shrewd and clever drafting and taking the best players available.

All I know is that whenever the talking heads, experts, as well as myself think the Cowboys absolutely need to do XYZ in the first few rounds of the draft, it almost never happens.

Clearly, the Cowboys don't go into a draft thinking "we definitely need to draft a running back in the first round", "we need to get a franchise QB in the first round", "we need to go pass rusher in the first round", etc. Seems like they are all about getting the BPA, and not just on side of the ball where they have a need.

And frankly, we should probably learn our lesson from last year when Jerry claimed that they wouldn't invest a lot of resources in the TB position and then the next year drafted Elliott. Pay little attention to what they say.

McClay's comments are sensible but generic. I'm confident in their current talent analysis but not so much concerning how stringent they evaluate drafting certain characteristics. Randy Gregory is an outlier but I hope he has taught them better ways of discerning whether players with unquestionable talent and great potential can be solid draft options who can actually contribute early and often.

Yeah but I still think Gregory was worth the risk. I know a lot of people disagree but he was a Top 10 talent and the Cowboys thought they could help him get over his drug issue. I don't think you can just stop doing things like that have huge upsides.

For example, a guy like Noah Spence.

I agree, it is the smart way to build a team.

You never know how things may turn out. We might draft the BPA in a TE and then Witten could be hurt and we find that the drafted rookie may be invaluable in replacing Witten. We could draft a linebacker and Jaylon Smith may not be as good as we think and that rookie linebacker is much needed as a better player for Smith.

It's kind of like basketball where you're usually better off getting your 5 best players on the court instead of trying to put a player that fits every position on the court. More talent wins out and if it doesn't, then you know it's a poor coaching job being done. You can always replace the coach, especially when you have superior talent. But, if you have inferior talent and replace the coach, now you're just in a bigger hole that you have to get yourself out of.

Well, I will wait and see what they do in FA before be concerned with the draft.
I will look at players to draft, but only look, as those rankings will change. Especially after the combines.

We won't be active in FA, so they said. And probably won't be if the past years is an indication under McClay and Stephen.
I look for them to retain a good half of our own FA's. However, those of them we sigh, will not have an impact on the draft. As none of them are must sign types. It is just we have so many depth type, or starters that are good but not great types. However, they do form a core group.

On cap friendly deals, I would not mind Carr or Mo, same for Church or Wilcox...however address this in the draft also, if the player is there.

Best player available regardless of position.. literally don't give a damn about cdap players or reaches just because we need a body there.
