Let's look at some of the possible headlines we could see today.

Brian Stewart might finally, officially become a member of the Dallas Cowboys Coaching staff and named Defensive Coordinator. Talk about a long and winding road to get there. The Chargers really put this guy's feet to the fire. Here's hopinghe will be as good for this defense as we all hope he can be. I have to tell you, I am pretty pleased with the Coaching staff assembled overall. A good mixture of experience and youthful energy.

Next on the block is one I really hope and pray happens today. Marc Columbo might get his new contract. I really hope this gets done rather than him having to test the Free Agent market. If it doesn't get done it means we are probably looking for a RT and a RG. I hate the idea of replacing one whole side of an O-line in one off season.

That's a good segue into another possible story. Is this the end of the line for Marco Rivera in Dallas? I have to think it is. Not sure when his roster bonus might be due if he has one, but I think it is pretty obvious that his time here has come to an end. Love the mentor aspect he brought to the O-line and think he could one day be a good coach, but 2 back surgeries is too much to overcome and be solid.

Drew Bledsoe might also be released today. What will the reaction to this be? He had some pretty rabid fans. But it is obvious he believes he can still be a starter in this league and will look for an opportunity to do that. I question whether this belief is realistic or not. I also question whether it is a wise move on his part. He has already been pushed aside for 3 young, up and coming QBs. If it happens a 4th time I think it completely removes him from Hall of Fame consideration despite his amazing numbers. Perhaps he should rest on his laurels and hang up his sneakers. Far be it from me to tell him what to do though. I don't consider him an all time great as it is, thus he isn't a Hall of Famer anyway. Hell of an ending for the "best QB we've had since Aikman."

Finally, as the players get released around the NFL there are going to be speculation threads and discussions about whether we should or shouldn't acquire the available players. I openly admit, I want one big splash in Free Agency. Just one, at RG which I think is the biggest hole on this team. My player of choice is Eric Steinbach. I wouldn't balk at Dielman. I'd even give Leonard Davis that shot if he wants to come back to Texas as bad as some speculate, but Steinbach makes the most sense to me by far. Other than that I want to get a servicable backup QB and that's about it. Give me those 2 things in Free Agency and I'll call it good. We don't have to break the bank or sign a bunch of players to have a great start to the player acquisition period. I would like that one splash though.

Bring on the stories.

Get Grammatica signed as well as an addition to your FA demands.

Something that not too many people are talking about.

Will Al Johnson be gone, it seems the majority feels he will be.

So do we pick up a center from some team, maybe off a practice squad or something.

Or...Do we wait until the draft and pick up a backup center.

Just something not many are talking about.

Also, who's going to get booted from the American Idol?

Should be an exciting day, maybe some interesting team cuts.

I hope we re-sign Johnson and I'd rather see a guard drafted rather than signed in FA, which would mean you could keep Rivera around one more year.

EJ Whitley will probably our backup center. He was on IR all last year.

Completely forgot about him...getting old like Pops.

He was drafted because he played so many different positions on the line so maybe he is an option at center.

Seems we're in talks with Colombo, Martin, and Kenyon. No Singleton, Johnson, Parrish. From the McBriar and notes thread.

I will be extremely happy if we get away this weekend with Harrington at backup QB and a RG (Davis/Steinbach since Dielman will be way too much I think).

Then the offense is set through FA (add WR/OL depth in draft/UDFA) then defense needs CB depth (yes Jones/Reeves are being tendered but they didn't impress last year), and some other depth.

Two hits in FA, then add depth later in FA.

We have 10 draft picks, so in reality outside of backup qb we dont even need free agency, if columbo is resigned.

I cant wait for the draft.

Al Johnson will end up in New England, Denver or Atlanta.

If Al can get >2 mill a year somewhere then he will be gone. But if he doesn't have any great offers on teams that will give him a shot at starting then I can see him coming back here on a 1-year deal. It is exactly the same situation as Gurode was in last year.

I'd like to see us re-sign

1. Colombo

2. Gramatica

3. K. Coleman. He provides some good rotational depth and is strong at the point of attack. I read earlier today on KFFL that KC Chiefs may be interested in him as well.

I would also think that Stewart will be named DC today (finally) and the coaching staff will be in place. Bledsoe's tenure will be over.

And hopefully in FA we sign an OG quickly. I don't think we'll sign either of the top 2, but I'd be happy enough with Davis or Dockery.

I think Johnson would be a good fit in Atlanta or Denver - teams that rely on smaller, more athletic linemen,

A shame that things didn't work out in Dallas, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

I hope they can get Columbo and Gramatica re-sigend before Friday.

In free agency, I'd take Dielman, Harrington and a Carlos Polk/Antwan Peek type linebacker for depth and be thrilled.

It's a shame he doesn't have the "mentality" to be a backup. What was good enough for a Hall of Famer like Johnny Unitas, for example, isn't good enough for Drew. He could've worked on his short passing game to make up for his lack of mobility, he could've gone into the Thanksgiving game to mop up for Romo to show support of the team, he could've hung around here for another year or two and been a mentor for Romo.

It's probably just as well that he'll be gone soon. He's a beggar who wants to be a chooser.

It's hard for anyone that has been a prolific QB his entire career to *switch* to being nothing more than a backup. This guy is high up on almost all of the QB lists of records. It would be like Emmitt Smith taking a backup role. It just wouldn't go over very well. It would be a lot easier for a guy who didn't have such a prolific career. Like say a Brad Johnson. Well, Bledsoe isn't Brad Johnson.

Did we ever tender Crayton? If not, that'd better happen today.
