Will we go short on DL Roster Spots

I have heard many say that we will go long on numbers at defensive tackle in light of last year's black hole at that position late last year. I'm not sure that is the case. Do we have 10 guys worth keeping at DL? Probably not. I am sure we need numbers on the DL, but keeping 20 players on the DL won't make the front 4 play any better, because only 4 will be on the field at a time. :)

I realize that we don't know what we have on the DL, but surly they can find 8 guys to use in rotation there that will get the job done, especially in light of the fact that many of them have perceived position flexibility. I am a proponent of keeping the best 53 guys on this roster. I know they can't all play at the same position, but let's not sacrifice a player who can actually play (since they aren't easy to find) merely to keep a stop gap player at another position to hold a place for a game or two.

If 2 of those 8 are Spencer and Lawrence, they don't have 8, they have 6. Lawrence is definitely an empty roster spot for a few games at least so right away 9 would be the low end for what they'll carry. Given that Spencer is not definite to start the season healthy and Melton hasn't played yet, 10 would have to realistically be the minimum that they'll carry.

again, the 75 and 53 cuts could be a tumultuous time around Valley Ranch

i just hope the scouts, coaches, and player personnel are doing their due diligence in evaluating players on the bubble from other teams and identifying those whose team is trying to "stash" on their respective practice squads

Lawrence will be one of them, but he is injured. They'll want at least 8 healthy DL. The T. McClain injury is a problem. If he was healthy, they would be more likely to dump Hayden.

Exactly. You need 8 healthy guys, but we're so bad that we might need to keep 3-4 injured guys on the active roster.

That's how I always feel. You go long at positions where the delta between what you'd store on your roster and what you'd find in the street is high. In the case of our DL, that's probably not the case. We're better off going long at positions where the players we'd keep are actually, you know, good.

Spencer and Lawrence. McClain. Melton. That's four injured players all injured. Selvie, Crawford, Hayden, and Mincey have all started. Only Lawrence hasn't started a NFL game. That's eight. Right now Minter is nine. Now add another.

I'd say there's at least 2 Week 1 players on the defensive line, that are about to get cut from other teams. That's how bad we need quality on the DL.

I'll be flabbergasted if the staff fails to claim at least one or two more DEs to add to the list of those already on the roster. There should be some pretty promising youngsters becoming available either through trade or via the waiver wire before or after the point in time the final cuts are in. I wouldn't doubt for a second that several candidates are already on Will McClay's list as this is being posted.

Impressive how you keep repeating this like it would somehow become true if you do it enough.
