CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Carolina Panthers all-time leading rusher DeAngelo Williams says as a result of the way the organization treated the death of his mother to breast cancer in May, that he wasn't upset when told last week he would be released.

Williams told Charlotte's WBTV, in an exclusive interview that aired Monday night announcing he would be released, that defensive end Greg Hardy was the only member of the organization to attend his mother's funeral in Arkansas after she died of breast cancer.

The funeral was on May 24, 11 days after Hardy was arrested on domestic violence charges in Charlotte. Hardy recently had the charges dropped.

"One player came,'' Williams told WBTV. "And there is nothing that he can say or do in my eyes that is bad. ... Greg Hardy. All the players around the league, all the players in the locker room, they texted and called. But Greg Hardy showed up.''

Williams told WBTV he met with general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Ron Rivera last week. He said that's whenthey informed him he would be released.

The Panthers said Williams has not been officially released and did not give a timetable for when that might happen. Williams has one year left on his contract and is scheduled to count $6.3 million against the 2015 salary cap.

I seem to always think he was injury prone but he seems to have played in a lot of games for the Panthers. If we do not bring Murray back could be decent vet fill in and still draft a young back.

I'll admit I knew very little about Hardy outside of his arrest. That story changes the perspective of Hardy for me.

It's pretty consistent with the other tidbits floating around about Hardy that I've come across when looking into the backstory behind his DV charges. He seems to have been a well-liked player in that locker room.

Of course, that goes hand-in-hand with being a 15-sack player. It's easy to like your playmakers. But it's cool to hear he showed up for a teammate.

I'm glad the Cowboys treated Brandon Carr well when his mother died, but I don't know how many players could show up for a funeral in the middle of training camp. At least the organization allowed him to take his time and grieve.

He doesn't really leave Charlotte from what I understand. He was clubbing it up the entire year. Technically it is the off-season...many more players and coaches should have gone.

I've never worked anywhere where I attended the funerals of co-workers family, even amongst co-workers I'm friendly and social with.

Nor have I ever expected the company I worked for to send reps to my family funerals

A lot of professional players are friends with members if teammates family. If a co-worker of yours was a friend to your mother, I think you'd want them to come.

Yeah, everything I've read about Hardy as a teammate has been a glowing review, with teammates loving playing with him and Hardy being a great guy to be around.

Many were openly campaigning for his return to Carolina.

I feel sorry for you. Co workers should support one another IMO.
