Williams to Report to Dolphins July 24

Keven Lerner, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports RB Ricky Williams is expected to report to the Miami Dolphins for the first day of training camp, according to an NFL.com report. Official conversations regarding his reinstatement to the NFL will take place later this week, but Williams is expected to report to camp Sunday, July 24. His return is two days from the one-year anniversary that he abruptly retired. Williams will also be granted a two-day exemption on the condition that he will continue complying with the NFL's drug testing system.

So, when he reports, will he serve any suspension? I don't get how he essentially walked away from the league before he was suspended and gets no penalty when he gets back?????

He's suspended for 4 games. But that doesn't affect training camp or preseason.

actually, i think because of the timing of his retirement and reinstatement, he doesn't have to serve the 4 games. could be wrong tho.

Think so? For what?

Curious more than anything because teams couldn't give away Alexander, James or Henry this offseason.

Sea and Indy both wanted firsts for Alexander and James in a draft stocked with RB talent. Henry just got traded....

Needs tend to develop for teams as the season goes on, someone will get injured, some surprise team will want a better RB, and even being a pot head, Ricky's got talent. I imagine Mia would be happy to get almost anything for him, especially since they already have their RB of the future.

I can only imagine them bringing him back in order to trade him. They had to have a good hunch that he was coming back by the draft, so why would they use the #4 pick or whatever they had on an RB. I bet RW doesnt even dress for a game this year...or atleast not in a Miami uniform.

Regardless of the timing, he is suspended for the first 4 games of the season.

If Williams returns, he'd likely have to wait until July to un-retire. Otherwise, he would face a one-year suspension for his violations of the NFL's substance-abuse program.

"He owes a four-game suspension provided he comes back after the one-year anniversary of his retirement," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Friday.

so because of timing its 4 games instead of 1 year.

Saban, Williams to forge new relationship

By Adam Schefter
Special to NFL.com

Adam Schefter's "Around the League" reports and commentaries can be seen regularly on NFL Total Access.

(July 18, 2005) -- On Nick Saban's first day as Dolphins' coach in training camp, running back Ricky Williams is expected be there to join him.

The official conversations between both sides will take place later this week, but Williams is expected to be notified that the NFL will be clearing him to report to training camp with the rest of his teammates on Sunday, July 24, for the first day of on-field drills for the following day -- two days from the one-year anniversary that Williams retired.

The league will be granting Williams a two-day exemption on the condition that the running back will continue complying with the NFL's testing program. Since he made his intentions to return clear, Williams has been in full compliance. Still, Williams' four-game suspension to open the season will not be lifted and it will remain in effect.

But Williams, whose weight is back up above 215 pounds, according to his agent Leigh Steinberg, is expected to be allowed to go through the rigors of the first two days of camp with the rest of his team.

And behind the scenes, with Williams already in the South Florida area, he is said to have begun mending fences with some of his teammates and reaching out to them. And that will be one of the most intriguing subplots once Williams reports to camp -- how the rest of his teammates treat him.

If he had unretired within 1 year, it would have been a year suspension, but that wouldn't have affected the 4-game suspension that he had already incurred, so it would have been 20 games instead of 4.

Not only will he play for Miami this year, but he will be with Miami for the entire year (minus the 4 game obviously). Here's why:

DOUBTS:
The are plenty of doubts out there as to what shape Ricky is in, what his motives for returning are, and what his commitment will be like. He has already stated that he only wants to play a couple more years. And he is one more failed drug test away from a 1 year suspension. Oh, and he's ssupended for 4 games this year.

Now, putting all of that aside, lets say that a team is willing to risk all of the above becasue Ricky has talent, the one thing the team would need to see, is if Ricky is still Ricky.....can he still play?

Well unless they can be convinced in the pre-season, that won't have a chance to see him in a regular season game before the trade deadline.

He's suspended for the first 4 games, and the Dolphins have a week 4 bye......so Ricky's first regular season action won't be until Week 6 against the Bucs. When's the trade deadline?? Week 6.

This all makes a Ricky trade this year highly unlikely.
