Win XP won't boot...

from either the hard drive or the CD-ROM. The error message (blackscreen) tells me that there is a hardware configuration problem. I've reset the factory defaults. Now, I'm stumped. Can anyone give me some guidance on this issue?

Can you boot in to safe mode?

did you recently add a piece of hardware? if its not properly installed it might cause a problem, like a piece of ram thats only half on, or a hdd that isn't fully attached
