Calling all the computer experts at the zone.

Just did a Windows XP Home install on a Dell with Service Pack 2.

Should I put SP3?

I have heard mixed reviews on this... problems etc?

Thanks in advance

I think it gives you a backup option before installing if, I can't remember, if it does...do the backup option.

Or you can do a system save/restore point.

Just in case SP3 wigs out your computer you can go back.

Cool... I know it was released in April and many said wait until bugs are worked out of it.

I just did a computer for a friend its a Dell 4200S 1.7GHZ Dimension with 256M Ram.
I was thinking that maybe I would leave off SP3 so that it doesnt slow down the performance too much. (basically, they dont want to spend money for RAM etc)

So in your opinion, SP3 on or off? performance/speed-wise?

SP3 is on the machine now but I was thinking of taking it off?

I haven't noticed any difference in speed. RAM is cheap these days unless it's really hard to find.

If it's a Dell Dimension 4200 Newegg has a 256 chip for $33

That chip (1.7 gig) he should be able to find the ram.

It's the older computers that the ram is expensive because it is harder to find.

But, looks like it is not his call as he was fixing it for someone else.

I don't think the SP3 will be anymore of a drag on the machine however he might want to check the HD size. If it is a small HD with limited free space, he could remove it.

Thanks guys. You answered everything.

The HD is 38G and has plenty of space left (abot 33G)
