Another post…I guess I am on a roll. Anyway–
Let me say this is merely opinion, and like my dad always said—they’re like bodily solid human waste evacuation portals (pardon the Pixar/Disney version of well, you know), they stink and everyone has one! So take it for what it’s worth.
Having dispensed with the pleasantries let’s get back to the premise of this post.
Winning Super Bowls requires….
1. Good luck;
2. Good leadership (this term is not intended to include players rather front office work and coaching);
3. Good luck;
4. Good dedicated (a.k.a. “quality”) players; and
5. Good luck.
You may have noticed a recurring theme here—luck. Luck plays such a huge role in winning if, in most cases, you don’t have both good leadership and quality players you aren’t going to bring home a trophy unless you get really lucky (Notice I am calling out the Giants ‘08). I recognize here that Troy and Company overcame poor leadership in ’96 to win it all but that is a rarity. Again, the idea here is that the odds are against you making and winning the Super Bowl, or winning a regular season game for that matter. Thus, this leaves little room for error from the areas that you can control—leadership and players.
To me I think this, in part, is why the Cowboys are struggling lately…we just don’t have the requisite pieces in place to overcome the bad luck. I don’t pretend to know which pieces we have now that are foundations on which to build and shift the balance.
I recognize that this won’t sit well with the “luck, what luck…you make your own luck” crowd. However, if you think about it my premise is essentially that—you can either succumb to luck or bend it to your will. Just my 2 cents!
Go Cowboys!
