Winning Super Bowls requires

Another post…I guess I am on a roll. Anyway–

Let me say this is merely opinion, and like my dad always said—they’re like bodily solid human waste evacuation portals (pardon the Pixar/Disney version of well, you know), they stink and everyone has one! So take it for what it’s worth.

Having dispensed with the pleasantries let’s get back to the premise of this post.

Winning Super Bowls requires….

1. Good luck;

2. Good leadership (this term is not intended to include players rather front office work and coaching);

3. Good luck;

4. Good dedicated (a.k.a. “quality”) players; and

5. Good luck.

You may have noticed a recurring theme here—luck. Luck plays such a huge role in winning if, in most cases, you don’t have both good leadership and quality players you aren’t going to bring home a trophy unless you get really lucky (Notice I am calling out the Giants ‘08). I recognize here that Troy and Company overcame poor leadership in ’96 to win it all but that is a rarity. Again, the idea here is that the odds are against you making and winning the Super Bowl, or winning a regular season game for that matter. Thus, this leaves little room for error from the areas that you can control—leadership and players.

To me I think this, in part, is why the Cowboys are struggling lately…we just don’t have the requisite pieces in place to overcome the bad luck. I don’t pretend to know which pieces we have now that are foundations on which to build and shift the balance.

I recognize that this won’t sit well with the “luck, what luck…you make your own luck” crowd. However, if you think about it my premise is essentially that—you can either succumb to luck or bend it to your will. Just my 2 cents!

Go Cowboys!

There is no blue print. Each SB win is a story of its own and its why everyone watches the spectacle unfold before their eyes year in and out.

Let me add that your analysis is why I weighted luck so heavily in the mix.

teh same thing in the regular season and no matter how the rules change, it has stayed consistent, score more poitns than your opponent. And yes, if you think its anyother way, ask yourself this, has any team in the NFL given back a win?

Its simeple, score more points, you have three ways of doing it and all it takes is one point. Stats dont help, personality doesnt help, momentum cant score for you, freak play is just as acceptable as a well thought out tactic. Nope, they dont take the points away if your WR isnt 6 foot. Once the score is accepted, it goes on the board, at the end of the game, have more points. whether by 1 or 65, a win is a win is a win and you never have to give it back.

I do agree with the luck thing. If Micah Hyde holds onto that inteception from Kaepernick, Green Bay may very well be playing in the Super Bowl this year instead of the 49ers or Seattle.

Jimmy Johnson famously said that you make your own luck through preparation and details. Parcells had a similar quote, something to the effect that if you prepare and pay attention to the details, it is not luck.

I've also heard that there is no such thing as luck, you can't acquire, see it, hold it or even define it.

It takes a great QB play, great coaching, great drafting and managing of the team with a specific philosophy in mind. It also takes guts from top to bottom. Super Bowls and championship games are not for the soft hearted.

It's hard to make changes, and upgrades when you have average-above average guys eating up your cap space, who at this point have no business eating it up

If you can be successful in the trenches and get a few bounces, you have a chance at winning a SB. This is an era of decent, but not special or great, teams winning SBs.
