From a 2012 article before the Packers - Giants playoff game:

According to The Times, the ground at Lambeau Field has been heated since 1967 when the franchise installed electric coils underneath the playing surface to keep the ground soft in frigid conditions. The only reason "The Ice Bowl" -- the 1967 NFL Championship game between thePackers and the Dallas Cowboys -- occurred was because the sub-zero temperatures overwhelmed the recently installed heating system.

In 1997, the Packers replaced the coil system with a series of underground pipes filled with a solution that included antifreeze. The Times reported the temperature of the field is controlled by field manager Allen Johnson. Temperatures are expected to be in the 20s during Sunday's divisional round playoff game against the New York Giants, but the newspaper reported the field should read at a comfortable 40 degrees.

That's a lot like indoor radiant floor heating that some people do up here instead of furnaces. It makes for a comfortable basement.

I was the high for next Sunday was 18 degrees under sunny skies. They forecast may or may not hold true but both teams have to play in it and I think the Cowboys are built to handle it.

I read that they had never used the new heating system prior to the Ice Bowl. They had a tarp on the field over night which trapped the moisture evaporating from the heated field. When the tarp was removed, the moisture condensed and caused the ground to freeze.

Either way -- I'd expect the field will look very much like it did last year this time... a mixture of yellow & grey.

23 degrees? With the sun it'll probably feel around 27, maybe 28. We did play in Chicago when it was between 34-36 degrees the entire game, and it was night. We will be ready.

The high in Dallas will be 36 on Wednesday and Thursday with a low of 16. We can practice outside to acclimate. Our offense is built for this weather.

I'm in Chicago and it was -22 wind chill and -2 normal when I walked to the train today! Beautiful snow yesterday for a fire and some football.

You never get used to playing in those conditions. It will affect both teams.

Wow, didn't realize it was going to be that cold in Dallas. That will be helpful!

20 some degrees is a lot better than what it could be. That's the best news I've heard all day

National Weather service has revised it's Sunday estimate for Green Bay to a high of 15.

Sounds like the game has a chance of being played in the 10-15 degrees range minus whatever windchill may exist.

I read a lot of people saying "Dallas can't play in the cold!" as if EVERY player on this team is from Texas or something.

But growing up in the North, 23 is nothing.

Having lived in the neighboring state of Minn for a few years, 23 in January is springlike.
