Roy Williams. I was hoping that they would sign Romo earlier because he would have been much cheaper. Signing Roy Williams really handcuffed them also. That cap space would be nice right about now.

Ahhh I figured there would be people who wanted to sign him a little earlier but that isn't necassarily on just Jerry Jones. You have to understand that Romo, and more accurately his agent, knew that holding out as long as possible, while Romo started out hot, was uping his dollars. So they waited till a moment that was mutually acceptable for both sides to get it done.

Really wasnt a way that Jerry was likely to get it done before then. Romo and his agent were betting on him being able to up his dollars by playing well out of the gates and he did what he set out to do.

Frankly we should be darned glad we signed Romo. If we had waited til end of the season Jerry might have low balled him cause of playoff loss. While Romo could have still signed with us, it also possible he could have told Jerry he wanted to test FA market which would have forced Cowboys to put "exclusive franchise" tag on him -- not best situation to be in with your QB.

I'm absolutely thrilled we signed him and was even more thrilled we did it during the year last year and got it out of the way.

I just wanted to point out that it probably wasn't a situation where either side can be 100% called on for when the contract was done.

Romo deserves to get paid what he's worth, why are you wish the man got paid less?

Roy's contract hasn't hamstrung the team. Romo's contract is also quite reasonable, considering he's a two-time pro bowl quarterback who was expected to break the bank when he got his new deal. People were disappointed he didn't set a new record.

It's the fact that in the past two years, extensions have been given to Witten, Bradie, Gurode, and Colombo. They also gave big signing and option bonuses to T.O. and Bigg. All of these contracts combined were done BEFORE Romo's contract was addressed. Should we do a redo on some of those contracts as well?

While some extra cap space might help, who's on the market right now that you wish the 'boys could go get? Other than their own FAs, there's nobody out there that presents a huge upgrade over what the 'boys currently have.

You're not going to be able to save money on a top notch QB for too long. It's such a premium position that sooner or later you pretty much have to pay up. That's why you almost never see good, established QB's hold out because teams are in such fear they could possibly hold out that they don't even risk it.

The entire "we should've signed Romo earlier to save money" line is just not very well thought out.

Actually I think Bulgar of the Rams did hold out in TC about 2 years ago but Rams relented and got the deal done. The QB remains the premium position in the NFL particularly now that more teams are passing so much, including the Cowboys. BTW: You could hide poor QB play when a team was either balanced or all about the defense; not in today's game.

And you could bet that a team like the Bears or Vikings would have gone after him. Two No. 1 picks isn't much to go after a franchise quarterback.

QB being a premium position has little to do with teams passing more since teams on average are only passing about 5-6 more times per game than they were in the 80's.

There's a lot of reasons why the QB position is a premium, but with turnover margin having such a strong correlation to winning in the NFL, QB's on average are responsible for about 75% of the turnovers in the NFL each year. So if you can get a good QB who is likely to turn the ball over less, then you're increasing your chances to win.

Of course, there's exceptions to the rule, but that's the way it usually plays out.
