Did this deal buy us FA room? I'm just curious what the effect is. I'm happy we have this done and know Romo will retire here!

Per Todd Archer: Tony Romo's new cap # this year - $11.818m. Saves $5m of space this year.

We'll need most of that space for our draft picks. There's probably enough maybe to bring in another player playing close to the vet min.

The only way we'll get much room is if we manage to do a cap-friendly deal with Spencer. Given how long negotiations have been going I just don't think they can agree on what he is worth. I'm expecting him to play out the year and then test FA next year (and realize he isn't worth what he thinks he is).

$5m? that's kinda a bummer...I was hoping for more like $8m - $10m since this is a longer deal...oh well, I'll take it! Now get the fat dudes up front to protect him!

It gives us enough to sign someone and I bet Spencer is next.

@SullyBaldHead: Am guessing cap reduction for Romo's deal will be around $10 million, enough for this rookie class and another mid-level free agent.

Eskimo, you know that the draft picks will only cost a couple million in additional cap space and that Spears savings as a June 1st cut will cover those costs. If you don't it is because you haven't been paying attention.

I have heard reports of savings from 5m to 9m. The goal originally was around 5m so anymore than that would be icing on the cake. Probably gets Durant on the books officially, room for one signing of a guy like Moore or Winston. I'd make the June 1st cut of Free official and make my decision on Spencer and be done with things till the draft.

Really? How could we have reduced Romo's cap hit to 7 mil?

No idea, have heard many different scenarios and don't know what is true or false. Some said if Romo was extended, it could free up around 7 mill this season, and some said more like 4. In short, just confused on how contracts are written up and what loopholes can be used.

Don't forget Free will save 7 mill when he gets cut June 1st

exactly, Free is more than enough to sign the rookies. Reach a deal with Spencer, and imo trade for Braden Albert.

People have ridiculous expectations, and then they are angry when those expectations aren't reached.

5 million is a pretty huge drop.

We resign Spencer longer term to maybe 7 or 8 million a year, and we can probably get 4 million or so.

We can begin to sign some moderate free agents, and our draft picks with these moves.

It'll be easier to afford players after we're out of this 5 million a year cap penalty. So factor that in as well.

@AlbertBreer: Romo's base for 2013 is now $1.5M. Taking the $5M signing bonus proration, adding $3.273M in previous proration ... '13 cap number = $9.773M

Free will not save us 7m this year if a June 1st cut. He will save about 3.5m this year. When Free restructured last year it added more bonus that would be accelerated. He will save about 7.5m against next year's cap.
