@AlbertBreer: Romo's base for 2013 is now $1.5M. Taking the $5M signing bonus proration, adding $3.273M in previous proration ... '13 cap number = $9.773M

More Breer: "So since Romo's previous cap number was $16,818,835 ... 2013 cap savings would add up to $7,045,835."

5 million is a pretty huge drop.

We resign Spencer longer term to maybe 7 or 8 million a year, and we can probably get 4 million or so.

We can begin to sign some moderate free agents, and our draft picks with these moves.

It'll be easier to afford players after we're out of this 5 million a year cap penalty. So factor that in as well.

I agree 100% I'd like to us see bring a guy like Sedrick Ellis to add some depth at DT for cheap. Other than bringing in help in the trenches everything else would just be a luxury and a waste IMO.

We'll need most of that space for our draft picks. There's probably enough maybe to bring in another player playing close to the vet min.

No we won't. Already have that money in the bank for cutting Spears.

NFLN just said we cleared 7 million in cap room with this. Of course it is NFLN so it should be very suspect.

I like those numbers if correct.

It's funny how some are looking at this like Romo's trying to handcuff the team. Instead, he takes a $1.5 million base this year that gives the team some operating room.

Not trying to make it out like Romo's sacrificing money for the team, just that he's not making it all about him by demanding a lot of base salary on the front end.

Yup like it has been repeated, 2-3 mil is enough for the rookies all of them.

Let me get this straight...I read and thought by extending Tony, Dallas could possibly save 7-8 million towards the 2013 cap. This to you is a ridiculous expectation and now I am angry?

I am happy Romo is re-signed, also think the deal is decent. You will not find one post by me complaining about the cap hits in regards to any player, not one!

Way to reach there though :bravo:

Looks like right now according to tweets and TV we may have the 7 mil.

Eskimo, you know that the draft picks will only cost a couple million in additional cap space and that Spears savings as a June 1st cut will cover those costs. If you don't it is because you haven't been paying attention.

I have heard reports of savings from 5m to 9m. The goal originally was around 5m so anymore than that would be icing on the cake. Probably gets Durant on the books officially, room for one signing of a guy like Moore or Winston. I'd make the June 1st cut of Free official and make my decision on Spencer and be done with things till the draft.

Yes, either cutting Free or getting the Spencer deal done would create much more major cap room.

You're probably right about the space for the draft picks. We have six this year. I think I'm confusing the rookie cap versus the cap space they will take up for the first year of their deal. I seem to remember the rookie cap being around $5M last year.

Breer correcting himself: "That means the Cowboys save exactly $5 million on the salary cap for 2013 with this signing. My bad on the bad math."

Should be plenty since Dallas isn't going to suddenly got out and sign 10 free agents.

Most we can hope is maybe Moore and one or two others "cheapies."

If you did the math on your own you would see that was impossible.

The cowboys are still on the hook for the 2013 original prorated signing bonus from his previous contract.

He is earning base salary of 1.5 million this year, and his signing bonus was 25 million for 6 years, which is also about as small as you can go... Especially with a back loaded contract...

Not sure how we would get 8 million this year.

5 million is quite a bit if you think about it.

Many of the free agents we're going to see are going to come in near vet minimum levels. At least for the first year of their deals.

You re-sign spencer, and we can really go to work on getting some help here.

Moore is a must. I would like Slauson as well if we won't draft a guard early. Winston would be a good choice. We're in pretty good shape right now to focus on that offensive line.

exactly, Free is more than enough to sign the rookies. Reach a deal with Spencer, and imo trade for Braden Albert.

This is the same mistake I think keeps getting made on Free. No savings if we cut him now. 3.5m savings this year if a June 1st cut and 7.5m next year. Most of the people are forgetting the pro rata acceleration for the restructure Free did last year.

I'm getting 10.985 million not 11.82 million.

1.5 million base salary
5,318,835 previous prorated
4,166,667 new prorated signing bonus

Oh, it's plenty. I just don't expect Dallas to use it all in FA.

Might end up extending another player as the year progresses, though.

You're dividing over 6 years and they are dividing by 5 years.

I believe that Spears was designated a June 1st cut, so that's when we get his money. I only want one more FA real bad, that's Brandon Moore
