Witten needs to retire

My problem isn't Witten. It's the insistence on having him be such a focal point of this offense. He should've been in a similar role that Antonio Gates is in. Instead, he's playing more reps than younger and faster options. It's just dumb.

The word here is Progress Stopper. Somebody like Rico should get 60-70% of the reps and Witten could stick around for depth and “Veteran leadership” but in a reduced capacity...

We need to revamp the entire receiver core with at least 2 draft picks....

Rico should be getting 60-70% of the reps? How has he earned that?

Literally anybody could avg 35 yards a game and 8 yards a catch. Theyre horrible numbers

Don't you think the team only averaging 207 passing yards per game maybe played a part in Witten's low numbers? Oh, and it was 8.9 ypc, so 9 would be much more accurate if rounding.

Can't agree with you on this. No player should play just because of what he HAS been. I can't definitively agree he has been the best TE on the roster for a number of years. Hanna is a better \ more consistent blocker and certainly more agile in the receiving game. He just never gets opportunities. Even if Jason was the best on the team, that level isn't good enough.

His playing time & pay needs to decrease drastically & then perhaps he can give you performance in small doses that is acceptable.

I'm not sure what people are reading to suggest I think Witten's snaps should be a function of what he used to be as a TE. He's getting the snaps because he continues to be the best TE on the roster, period. Hanna isn't a better blocker either inline or in space, and while he's more agile in the receiving game, that's always been the case. He doesn't have Witten's hands or run comparable routes. I actually prefer Swaim to Hanna, and think it's more likely Hanna is playing somewhere else next season than it is he replaces Witten as the starter. They like Jarwin, and if Gathers shows improvement in camp, Swaim looks like the better value at TE2, with Gathers or a draft pick next season the long term replacement for Witten.

Like I said above, I'm all for an actual upgrade at TE if we can find a way to get one. I wouldn't spend money on it this year and definitely not a premium pick on it in the draft.

Witten could do that about 7-8 years ago....but yes, he's done and has been done. Thanks for the years Witten but we need to get younger in that position.

He has been "done" at least 3 years, but fans don't want to admit it because he is a fan favorite and a great guy.

Because if u think Jason should play until he wants, then yea its a joke of a post

Here's that pesky sentence again: 'He should play until he wants to quit or we have a better player on the roster.'

There are some who point to his stats and say he's still an upper echelon TE. But watch those two TEs last night, especially Ertz, and try to tell me again that Witten is in that class.

He doesn't need to retire but they need to find another playmaking TE that can stress defenses like Ertz does.

He is done.

Written doesn’t need to retire.

He is still a team leader and can be a teacher. He also still has reliable hands though not much else.

What he needs to do is take less money and take an Antonio Gates role.

That's part of what is wrong with this team. We tolerate sub par play and then wonder why we haven't been to the SB for 20 plus years.

Then u should remove that first part because its a really dumb thing to write

Pretty much every tight end on the team is an improvement over him at this point. He is that bad. Moreover we have some talent that is better than him that never sees the field.

NFL Coaches in 2018: Lets make Jason Witten a replacement alternate for the Pro Bowl.

Dallas Fans in 2018: Lets push Jason Witten out on an ice flow like the Eskimos do with the elderly.

I think a lot of you as a poster but you are thinking with your heart. He is a serious liability. Anyone who can't see that is looking at him with rose colored glasses.

That's too good for him with all the cap space and snaps he has consumed for the past several years.

The whole idea that Witten is a great leader is overrated.

A real leader to me is someone like Brandon Carr was who takes a position group under his wing and spends extra time with them helping them learn the defense, refine their technique, and generally improve their game.

Yes Witten does rah-rah stuff before games and practice and yes he will call out players that are dogging it or are just plain bad like Brodney Poole. At the same time, Anthony Brown talked about how when he came in Carr invited him over to his house and spent extra time with him after practice and in film sessions. The next time you hear a story about that with Witten will be the first time.

I don't think he needs to retire but the club needs to stop handing him 100% of the snaps and let other players develop. The over/under on how many more seasons he is going to play at this point is 1 and he simply lacks the speed and quickness he once did for all his guile. Swaim's play dwindled to nothing last year after a promising rookie campaign. We have no idea what Rico can be. Giving all the snaps to Witten and Hanna doesn't help.

I disagree with this notion and have for a few year now. Hanna is awesome in space and Witten has struggled with quickness for a few years now. Witten is the more powerful blocker getting drive but he doesn't reach or sustain like Hanna does.

Now as a pass catcher Hanna is an absolute slug coming out of breaks. Putrid routes. Witten has some of the best hands of any TE ever. His focus and hand strength'coordination is remarkable.

it height of selfishness that he is coming back,a TE is way to important in this offense and i cant take anymore 3rd downs where he falls 1 yard short of the sticks.

You're misunderstanding his point. He is saying until we get someone to push him out, he is here to stay, and I agree with him. James Hanna isn't going to beat out Jason Witten. Rico Gathers won't beat out Witten when he is on IR. Gavin Escobar won't beat out Jason Witten because he was a huge bust and no longer on the team.
