Watch honoring 1940 NFL champs still ticking
Associated Press
CHICAGO -- A rare Chicago Bears relic is still a-ticking.
A suburban Chicago woman recently opened a drawer in her house and found a 1940 Bears NFL championship watch that still runs.
In that year, the Bears beat the Washington Commanders 73-0 in the NFL championship. That season, players on the championship team got watches instead of rings.
:laugh2:
The timepiece originally belonged to fullback Gary Famiglietti who played for the Bears from 1938 to 1945. He died in 1986.
The watch changed owners and in the early 1990s it was given to Kurt Swanson of McHenry, who died in November 2006.
His widow Holly Swanson said the watch was payment for a plumbing job her husband did. She wasn't sure how the watch got from Famiglietti to her husband.
"I've been going through some of his things and I found the box," she said. "I had completely forgotten we ever had it."
The watch is engraved with the 1940 championship status and Famiglietti's name.
Swanson said she plans to sell the watch on eBay, but she's got a soft spot for a certain buyer.
"I'm a die-hard Bears fan," she said. "So, if they give me the right price, I would like to see the Bears have it."
