Watch honoring 1940 NFL champs still ticking

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- A rare Chicago Bears relic is still a-ticking.

A suburban Chicago woman recently opened a drawer in her house and found a 1940 Bears NFL championship watch that still runs.

In that year, the Bears beat the Washington Commanders 73-0 in the NFL championship. That season, players on the championship team got watches instead of rings.

:laugh2:

The timepiece originally belonged to fullback Gary Famiglietti who played for the Bears from 1938 to 1945. He died in 1986.

The watch changed owners and in the early 1990s it was given to Kurt Swanson of McHenry, who died in November 2006.

His widow Holly Swanson said the watch was payment for a plumbing job her husband did. She wasn't sure how the watch got from Famiglietti to her husband.

"I've been going through some of his things and I found the box," she said. "I had completely forgotten we ever had it."

The watch is engraved with the 1940 championship status and Famiglietti's name.

Swanson said she plans to sell the watch on eBay, but she's got a soft spot for a certain buyer.

"I'm a die-hard Bears fan," she said. "So, if they give me the right price, I would like to see the Bears have it."

I once beat the Bengals 99-0 on Tecmo Super Bowl with the 'Boys. It was actually worse but they don't go over 100.

Miss that game.

The worst beat down in football history was 222-0 in a college game. Georgia Tech over Cumberland.

Ga Tech scored 63 points in the 1st quarter.
Matched that in the 2nd quarter.
54 in the 3rd.
42 in the 4th.

Weirdest stat of the game, no first downs. That means every time Ga Tech touched the ball they scored a TD.

The Bears scored 11 TDs that day and it could have been worse!

The officials eventually asked the Bears to stop kicking extra points and either run or pass for them as they were running out of footballs (back then fans got to keep the ball just like in baseball). They kicked 6 XPs successfully and missed 1, and tried to convert 4 times but were only successful once.

The Commanders had beaten the Bears 7-3 late in the season and the Bears were looking for some revenge. Boy did they ever get it too! Chicago ran for 391 yards and 7 TDs. They only completed 7 out of 10 passes for 138 yards and 2 TDs but they didn't need to pass much.

The Bears also returned 3 INTs for TDs, all in the 3rd quarter! They picked off 8 passes altogether: 4 from Frankie Filchock, 2 from Sammy Baugh, and 2 from Ray Zimmerman.

It was without a doubt the worst beatdown in NFL history and it came in the Championship game!

Even the time when the best offense ever played the worst defense ever in 1950 wasn't as bad a beatdown as that. The Rams scored a record 38.83 points per game that year and the Colts gave up an NFL record average of 38.5 points per game (both records still stand). The Rams won 70-27. The Colts only won 1 game that year (against the 3-9 Packers) while the Rams played the Cleveland Browns to the wire in the NFL Championship game.

The best part of the 1940 Championship game was that it happened to the Commanders!

Edit: My signature really fits for Commanders fans!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!

The next year, FDR made his famous quote about the day that will live infamy and Commanders' fans thought he was making fun of their beatdown to the Bears.

I know. Bad joke. :eek::

Pretty much. They cancelled their football program, so student manager George Allen got a bunch of his frat brothers together to play the game. Ga Tech John Heisman (yes, Heisman trophy namesake) was pissed about a basketball loss to them and told his guys to run it up.

They did.

If I remember correctly, this game happened during the war and all of Cumberlands players took off to fight. They scratched together a team of a bunch of local farmboys and whatnot to play the game.

that lady should think about donating the watch to Jeffrey Lurie, cuz that's the closest he'll come to a Super Bowl ring
