Woman says she killed husband over TV volume during Dallas Cowboys game 10:16 AM CT

10:25 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 12, 2009
By KIM HORNER / The Dallas Morning News

An Allen woman accused of killing her husband said she stabbed him in the heart after he turned up the volume of a Dallas Cowboys game, according to media reports.

A grand jury indicted Kimberly Shanks, 51, on May 7 for fatally stabbing Charles Shanks, 49, on Dec. 14. She will appear before a judge on May 27.

Shanks admitted to killing her husband at their home in the 1400 block of Lone Star Court on Dec. 14 after he turned up the volume of a Dallas Cowboys game “knowing it would keep her awake,” the Star Community Newspapers Web site reported, citing court documents.

The newspaper reported that Shanks told police she went into the kitchen for medication but grabbed a knife instead and “tried to stick the knife in his heart.”

She ran out of the house but returned with a landscaping rock from a neighbor's yard. She went inside to find her husband on the kitchen floor and she hit him on the back of the head with the rock to make sure he was knocked out. She also stabbed him in the back to make sure he was dead, the newspaper reported. She said she was afraid he would kill her.

Shanks told police the couple started arguing after her husband started drinking and threatened to leave the country and never return. Shanks told police her husband had mentally abused her and that he refused her request for a divorce, the newspaper reported.

Shanks is being held at the Collin County Detention Center in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Yeah, she was afraid of him alright!!! Not even worth wondering what she considers mental abuse. Somehow she uses the "I was mentally abused and scared for my life" excuse. He's the one saying he's going to leave but she's afraid. Soundslike a mentally ill and controlling female to me.

If she was controlling, he wouldn't be watching games at all, or she would have stabbed him in pre-season.

Just sayin.

And you can't judge what they were going through as a couple from a story in the paper.

Never date a woman with a tatto of a skull on her shoulder or a woman with the last name SHANKS. I mean c'mon, Kim Shanks?

Maybe so he didn't have to listen to her.

So the "oh yah? You don't want to turn the volume down?" Go get a knife, aim specifically for his heart and puncture his chest with the knife, isn't an act of trying to regain control at any expense? Then go get a rock outside and smash him in the head.

How about the "oh yah? You're going to move far away out of the country from me? Not over your dead body you won't". Hey, she brought it up in her disclosure that he was threatening to leave the country just to get away from their relationship. No, not the controlling type at all.

Guess if she was the controlling type, he wouldn't be able to leave the house at all, let alone watch preseason football right? Pffffff. Her loss of control, not just over the volume of the TV, but over her relationship overall is what angered her to the point to murder her husband.

Not trying to make this a gender thing but science has proven that females don't physically dominate men so easily. Doubt she was just able to walk up to him and hit him straight in the heart. He was weakened, blindsided somehow first.

She was so afraid of him, that she killed him because he said that he was going to leave the country??

Anyone else find these statements contradictory?

Man, that's a bad way to go out...

By the way, I don't value the media for the ink it's written with, but I'll value her actions. A man is murdered, admittedly by his own wife who apparently went down to get her "medication" first, but decides to knife the "old man" in the heart instead.

I don't know Faerluna what you need to hear out of this, but clinically insane (medication), murder of your significant other (who wants to leave the country to get away from you) and controlling just glare at me when I read the details.

She admits to everything and instead of going to jail wants to blame her insanity, lack of volume control and his supposed mental abuse for her actions. Not one iota of remorse or missing her husband. Just because it's a female, lets not sugar coat here Faerluna. Killing a man over volume control and because he indicates a possibility of leaving the relationship is an attempt to gain back a loss of control.

Guess you missed this part:

Shanks told police her husband had mentally abused her and that he refused her request for a divorce, the newspaper reported.
I really am not saying what the woman did is ok, and frankly, I didn't really read your response because I don't think this story is worth a 3 paragraph response that I have no intention of debating or otherwise.

He's dead, she's in jail. Crappy from every angle. Just saying you didn't live there, you don't know either one of them. Never assume.

Exactly!!!! You got my point. How are you afraid of someone who says they will just take the passive route and leave the country. When a man says to his wife "I've got to move away from you as far as possible", wooooh. She is the one who provided those details in her disclosure.

Coincidentally enough, she happens to be able to overpower this guy and stick him in his heart. Oh, and since he was still breathing and showed signs of survival, let me go get a rock and slam it over his head instead of the paramedics. Geee, the guy didn't leave the country fast enough.

I'm not going to just move to another county, I've got to leave the country. Woooh, I wonder what this lady did to keep this guy there all that time and what transpired during that time for him to say that? How come she never wanted to leave the country if he was so mentally abusive? Clinically insane person calling someonementally abusive. How ironic.
