World of Warcraft or otherwise known as simply, WoW is one of the most popular and successful computer games in history. It is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game that 6 million people pay $10 -15 per month to play. This type of popularity creates a sample size that is large enough to reflect the forces that control it. In Layman's terms, with this many people playing this online game at any given time human nature tends to get a stronger representation.

The first "reality" check was a bug that caused a plague to outbreak and affect people's characters in certain cases instantly killing any player below a certain level.

The second "reality" check was when this group of Warcraft players otherwise known as a guild interrupted a memorial service. Apparently, some dude dies in real life who is a popular WoW player. The people in the game think it would be nice to have a memorial for the player so they log into his account, take the character to a lake, and set it up for everyone to come pay their respects.

A bunch of dudes decide this would be a great time to ambush everyone so they run over a hill, kill the dead guy's character, and then wipe out everyone who was there to show their respects. They filmed the whole thing and put it on the net for everyone to see.

Ya, there were people complaining for weeks about this incident on the WoW forums.

And yes, I am a nerd.

To really keep it in perspective. A person here that posted alot would be missed by many who have never actually met them as well. Attachments can be made without proximity. As would be the case also by many should their favorite player die even if they had never met that person. It would not be the same as a friend or family member, but it can still trigger an emotional response.

There was a similar incedent in SW on the Bronzebeard server but the horde tried to hold a funeral in the human capital. So that was kind of dumb. There's an exact replica of the chapel in Tyrs Hand iirc.

You fellas are going to laugh but I've seen this stuff firsthand.

My little bro was a big time computer nerd, god love him. The kind of fella who switches from electrical to chemical engineering in college, just because he's bored. :D

Anyways, he was a huge Ultima Online player. You may remember that old 2-D game as the one that really started this whole Everquest, World of Warcraft craze.

So I'm at my parents house helping out with the funeral, and he gets the usual flower and card assortment from friends and family. One day, we start getting tons of flowers from people we don't recognize. Tons of names like ViperXX, CynthiasRose, etc.... Turns out they were all his gaming buddies. They even sent a link to a website that had screenshots of his "online funeral." The admin on the game's server had set up a permanent landmark in honor of him. Guess he was one of the biggest players in the game.

It's funny in an Ogre-esque "Neeeeeeeeeeeeerds" way, but just because folks are online, doesn't mean they're not human.:
