Some of the blame can be placed on the trademark squatters who went out and trademarked every rumored name WFT was considering.

If WFT had been smart, they would have announced that WFT was going to remain their official team name and that they had stopped looking for a new name.

Then they could have waited out the trademark squatters for a couple of years to give up and let all of the trademarks expire and then they could have gotten a name they really wanted.

Or they could have not jumped the gun to satisfy a few. Then obtained the rights themselves to any new names, before they announced they were dropping the old name.
