Would Eric Winston's Signing Signal a Philosophical Change on OL?

The Cowboys appear serious about signing former Texans and Chiefs RT Eric Winston, in a move to upgrade their right tackle spot. Completing such a move would get Dallas closer to their target of an upgraded line, without foreclosing the chance of taking an offensive lineman in either the 1st or the 2nd rounds of the draft.

What Winston's addition would do is point the arrow more towards guards who are better suited for a zone scheme. That's because Winston is a better fit for that type of running attack. He excelled as Duane Brown's complement with the Texans.

Readers may wonder if this changes Dallas' run philosophy? Not as much as you might think. Dallas has made a history of drafting bigger linemen who can play a more straight ahead game. That said, when the Cowboys' offensive line was dominating football in the '90s, under line coaches Tony Wise and Hudson Houck, it ran a hybrid system, which used zone blocking and man blocking plays. The unique quality of that group was that it was both big and agile. Larry Allen, Nate Newton and Co. could tee you up and blow you off the line of scrimmage, but they could also move laterally in unison and slide defensive lines side-to-side, creating massive cut-back lanes for Emmitt Smith.

Dallas has been moving towards a zone scheme for a while now.

i'm not sure how serious dallas is about winston. lots of agent rumors going around so time will tell. as for zone blocking we did alot of it the last two years. seems to fit well with murray too. he is a good cutter and good speed. one cut and off to the races. winston is a nice fit in that scheme and allows us to go guard early in the draft. then a rookie would have a vet next to him.

Houston made a statement after they cut him that he was not a great fit in their scheme.

some of you guys are falling for this again: this is the SAME crappy philosophy that brought us Bernadeau and Livings last season, who both suck. Journeymen olinemen that will "fit our scheme"....:bang2: IT's positively laughable folks, he simply isn't very good or KC would retain him PLUS he's had some injury issues.

He can't be worse than Free, and Parnell ain't ready. Unless we get a stud in the draft, we have what we have.
