The lack of productivity by the running game, especially in light of the expectations and assurances, won't allow us to forget Murray.
Last season DeMarco Murray led the league in yardage in 1st and 10 situations. Because of this, the Cowboys were rankled #1 in average yards per carry on 1st and ten with 5.2 yards.
In the 2nd half, they were first place with 5.6 yards a carry
On average, in the 2nd half the Cowboys lined up on 2nd down with 4.4 yards to go. That is an amazing advantage for any quuarterback, it opens up all types of options and prevents the defense from keying on either aspect of the offense, running or passing.
A backup quarterback could have really used that kind of advantage, particularly in the 2nd half.
Murray averaged 4.6 yards a carry in the 2nd half last season.
Randle is averaging 2.2 yards a carry after the 1st quarter. His "good game" was typical, he ran for 85 yards his first three carriese then 2 yards on his next 11. The stats don't tell you when these yards are produced, I will tell you they are far more important towards the end of the game. Randle is done after 10 carries, on average.
On 1st and ten in the 2nd half the Cowboys average 2.6 yards a carry, 3 full yards less than last season abnd currently ranked 27th. On average, it's 2nd and more than 7. You simply can't sustain 2nd half drives with these poor results.
It's a domino effect. Now they must pass more and the defense knows this. Even if they are successful, which is rare, the drives take a much shorter time, so the defense has to be on the field longer.
The wounded defense could have used a RB capable of extending drives and keeping them on the bench.
The depleted passing attack needed much more assistance from their running game.
Yes, DeMarco Murray, with his familiarity with the offense and mutual familiarity between him and the line would have made ALL the difference, just like it did last season.
