Retiring numbers?

I don't understand why some of the greatest players of all times numbers are eligible to be worn again.

Jerry's thinking is that there are not enough numbers to go around if you retire numbers, so there are only a few that he does not allow to be given out.

If he started retiring them, some of the greatest players of all time might feel slighted that their number is not retired.

Isnt Emmitt Smith number retired?
No Cowboys number is retired. Not one single one. The only number who has only been worn by one person is #74, but Chris Canty did briefly wear it in TC as a rookie. No one has worn 12 since Staubach retired. No one has worn 22 since Emmitt, but it is not retired.

Choice should use number 22 again.

There are several numbers that are "unofficially" retired. For whatever reason, they like to pretend otherwise.

FYI, the all bold type for every post is really silly. People will notice you and take you more seriously without the gimmick.

He honors the tradition of Tex Schramm and Tom Landry.

Yeah, I said "Jerry's thinking," but it goes back to Schramm/Landry and Jerry's just following suit.

I didn't stutter. It's a gimmick.

gimmick is a quirky feature that distinguishes a product or service without adding any obvious function or value. Thus, a gimmick sells solely on the basis of distinctiveness and may not appeal to the more savvy or shrewd customer.

So what am I trying to sell here? ;)

You're trying to make your posts stand out from others. It tends to backfire. I was telling you this for your benefit, not to rag on you. You won't be taken seriously. Same as someone who posts in all caps.

Like someone mentioned Staubach, Lilly, Emmitt and even Aikman's number are unofficially retired. Because teams usually take around 80 players to training camp sometimes they have to use one of the unofficial retired numbers for that purpose. The Cowboys tradition has always been to honor their great players in the ROH.
