Would Vandy have been cut...

if Columbo blocked properly, and Vandy made the kick to win the 2nd Skin game, no sure thing, but just assuming that he makes it

would Vandy still be here? that's a clutch-kick, it's importance being greater than the 2 FGs in the 1st half of the Indy game

idk, I think that might put Bills' mind more at ease, because that would be 2 big kicks he would have had under his belt, cuz remember Bill said the 50-yarder against the Skins in wk. 2 was a big kick

thoughts

*disclaimer* I'm for the move to cut Vandy, he just wasn't working out and had me cringeing too

I don't think that play even mattered......it think its the numerous times that he hit the post without being able to adjust.

Im sure the coaches have the film and know who messed up where. As a result, I doubt that play had any influence on their decision.

he sucked.......

you underrate game-winning Ks my friend

they give kickers confidence, and inspire coaches when they see that a K is capable of making them when it really counts

and it seemed Vandy got cut because he was out of sorts

Seriously though....if that play wasn't Mikes fault then how can you blame him for it and take that into consideration when he is cut......

you can't.

Like I said, the coaches know how botched that play.

They also know that mike might as well have been picking this weeks lottery numbers. He was just too inconsistant and showed no signs of making a change to that. It was just due.

I disagree. I think he would've been given at least one more week had he made that field goal.

The point is not that someone blocked it and they know who it was. The point is, if he'd made it, he would've made a pretty significant kick in the clutch.

Not that it matters now, but I think he would've been given another week at least.

A game-winning kick can do wonders for a struggling kicker. Who knows? He might have made both of those kicks against Indy if he had kicked the game-winner in Washington. But we'll never know.

I think this more had to do with:
  • 2 missed kicks against the Colts
  • A near miss FG against the Bucs
  • A near miss extra point (EXTRA POINT FOR CHRISSAKES!!!) against the Bucs
  • Poor kickoffs
  • Missed kicks in practices from training camp til the week of being cut
  • No sign of improvement
  • Word from his Patriot friends that Gramatica looked solid in training camp
By the way, I heard on NFL radio that some who attended Patriots training camp believed that Gramatica outperformed Gostkowski.

I know there's no way to be sure, but I've freeze framed that Washington kick and even though the ball barely went 2 feet before being blocked, it looked like it was going right.

I'm not saying anything for sure, certainly, but I think he misses that kick even if it isn't blocked.

That's what I was thinking when I saw the kick also, it's impossable to tell, but the thing sure looked like it didn't come off his foot the way he wanted, just like the kicks against the Colts. You could tell as soon as they were kicked it was going to be really close or a miss.

It also was going to be blocked at the LOS, it was waist high on the guys in the middle of the line when it got blocked.

Good question.

I think even if that FG hadn't been blocked, he still would've been released. Parcells relies on intuition and gut feeling, and the only good feeling he's had about Vandy was with the 50-yarder he made in the first Washington game. Everything before and after was negative.

The blocked FG in the second game against the Skins would have only been a 35-yarder had he made it. Parcells and everyone else probably would have come away impressed with Romo's comeback, not the kick.

Parcells was so right with his gut instinct to go with Romo, that it becomes easier for him to trust himself with other decisions. And harder for whatever opponents Parcells might have had within the organization to do anything about it.

While we're playing "what if?," where would we be right now if Bradie James doesn't drop that interception in Giants territory just before the half, and Bledsoe comes back onto the field and we score?

Had he hit the fg against the skins, then one could atleast argue, he hits the ones that matter. Would it change the fact that I got nervious for his fgs, no, but I think it would've bought him some more time.

Vandy didn't have a great kicking record from the time he arrived in Dallas. When looking at the body of work, it's amazing to me we waited this long to release him. IMO he should have been cut before Colomo missed the block in the 2nd Redstink game.

Naw, I think Parcells was struggling trying to find reasons to keep VJagt around instead of looking for reasons to cut him.

and that's why drafting a K is so risky. In this case it wasn't a big deal b/c Gostkowski also performed very well. But since he was a 4th round pick, he'd have to have been awful to not win the job
