Would you be interested in Quinn over Romo?

I really dislike silly threads and mock drafts where clearly talented players fall way below where they should go and miraculously end up on the team that the mock draft creator supports.

Had you told me a month ago that Quinn would fall out of the top 5, I would think you are crazy. But I have seen more and more that people are speculating he will fall out of the top 5. If that is the case, then the question is how far does the freefall occur?

And if the unthinkable happens, that he falls to us, do we take him in light of Romo?

This thought sounded silly to me until I looked at the teams and their needs at QB if he falls out of the top 5:

6. Commanders - Campbell
7. Vikings - Tavaris. Jackson (2nd round 2006)
8. Texans - Carr? Plummer?
9. Dolphins - Culpepper (expensive FA 2006)
10. Falcons - Vick/Shaub.
11. 49ers - Alex Smith.
12. Bills - JP Losman.
13. Rams - Bulger.

14. Panthers - Delhomme.
15. Steelers - Roethlisberger.
16. Packers - Favre; Aaron Rodgers, Ingle Martin, Todd Bouman
17. Jaguars - Garrard/Leftwich.
18. Bengals - Palmer.
19. Titans - Vince Young.
20. Giants - Manning.
21. Broncos - Cutler.

22. Dallas Cowboys - Romo.

Now, if he falls out of the top 5, the most obvious choice would be Houston. But there might be an issue there. Houston is apparently going to be bringing in Jake Plummer to reunite with Kubiak. That certainly doesn't mean they wouldn't take Quinn. But if they are sitting there with Quinn and Peterson on the board, I think they would go with Peterson on the theory that they could get Peterson in the first, maybe grab a good qb in the second and ride Plummer for a couple of years.

If he falls past Houston, then the freefall could be big. The only teams who would even look at him would be Carolina and Jax. (The Pack could be another choice, but I think at some point they will have to see if Rodgers or Ingle Martin have anything, since that is a 1st and 2nd round pick). Carolina and Jax both have qbs of questionable long term value. But if they both pass on Quinn, he will fall to 22.

Sounds crazy. But I thought it was crazy a few years ago when the #1 RB, Steven Jackson, somehow fell to us.

The draft is weird.

If he does, oh man do I see a giant clustermess here.

no, trade the pick
Jaguars may take him anyway.
Leftwich, getitng older, injuries, and Gerrard may not be the long term answer there.

Tough question. I think it would be hard to pass up Quinn should he fall to our pick.

Somebody will move up to take him if nobody in the top 10 needs a QB. If he were there at 23, which he won't be IMO, I'd trade the pick. I like Quinn but we have a guy we think will work. Better, IMO, to sign a talented backup with experience and start Romo but hey, if your really talking about BPA in the draft, then you would almost certainly have to take Quinn if he were there at 23.

Minnesota drafted their quarterback of the future last year in the 2nd round, Tavaris Jackson, the 5th QB taken. Minnesota won't draft Quinn.

Buffalo has JP Losman, who looked better this year and is only been the league for 3. No way do they take Quinn.

Green Bay has 3 young QBs who will fight it out for the job when Favre leaves: Aaron Rodgers (a 1st Round pick in 2005); Ingle Martin (a 3rd round pick in 2006) and Todd Bouman, who they signed from New Orleans. I think they have to give one of those guys a chance after next year.

Jacksonville is a possibility. I don't know what their plans are for Garrard.

Houston is one too. But Houston is going to be pressured to take Adrian Peterson if he is there after missing out on Reggie Bush. Peterson is a local boy. I think Houston take Peterson at #6 even if Quinn is there. Then they try to pick a QB in the 2nd or 3rd to ride the pine for a year or two behind Plummer.
________

Houston, Carolina, and Jax are the only teams I think look at him if he passes the top 5.

I would think one of them takes him.

But after the draft where team after team that needed a RB passed on Steven Jackson and he somehow fell to us, I have given up on assuming a team takes a player they could use as an upgrade.

Let me be clear: I don't think Quinn falls to us. I think he goes in the top 5. But, the idea that he is does is not outside the realm of possibility. And my point was, if he did, what do the Cowboys do?

They spent 2 first rounders on him and he is making progress.
Unlikely.

Huh? No they don't.

Vikings: Tavaris Jackson
Bills: JP Losman
Dolphins: Culpepper (who they just paid a ton for!)

No way do either of those three go QB in the first round. There are too many other holes that can be filled.

The Panthers don't have a need at QB: they have Delhomme. They would be one of the 3 teams that might consider taking a QB in the first though.

And the Texans won't have a need, per se. They are going to bring in Plummer for a couple of seasons. They will go after Peterson and maybe try to grab a guy like Drew Stanton in the 3rd.

First off, Quinn won't fall that far but if he did I don't see us replacing Romo with him.

Romo has the goods. He has shown it since the moment he stepped onto the field (despite his first pass being tipped at the line and picked off). He has excellent pocket-presence, see the field very well, can go through his reads very quickly, and gets the ball out fast. He has a good arm, is pretty accurate, and can run buy time with his legs or run for yardage when needed.

He also recovers well from mistakes and doesn't give up. His performance in the Pro-Bowl was a good example of this as he started out poorly but came on and almost pulled out the win.

For all of the hype surrounding Brady Quinn, I don't see all of those qualities in him. If we drafted him it would be because he was the best player available and we don't have a viable backup for Romo on the roster right now (assuming Bledsoe will be gone).

I agree completely. I am totally on the Romo bandwagon. I am happy and confident about him being a long term player at the position.

My initial point was a general one about the pressure that would be there. I imagine there would be immense pressure to take Quinn. There are other players that I really want the team to look into at #22.

I'll go on record as saying that I don't think Quinn falls out of the top 5, and even if he did and fell to us, I'd rather look elsewhere and give Romo the big extension.

Having Delhomme is a perfect reason to draft Quinn, IMO.

We need a backup QB right now with some of the goods, so to speak. I have a hard time saying trade the pick because I really like Quinn, but realistically do we need him right now? Probably not. I'm just gonna hope and pray that Romo is the answer and we're not kicking ourselves with "we should of's" for the next 3-5 years.
BTW.....I want o-lineman and as many as we can steal.

I don't see Buffalo taking a QB, Losman played well for them, very well in fact. I remember Norm on the Ticket mentioning that about midway through the year, so I started following him, he might end up being the best QB out of that draft. It was always said he had as much if not more potential than the QBs he came in with, but his head was a question mark...I work with a guy who played college ball with him, said he was a total tool, but that everyone agreed that his talent level was unreal.

Him and Lee Evans look to be a star combo for years...
