Rumor is he wants out at ND even if they continue to have a good season this year. i guess ND has really made it tough to win there ever since Holtz left.

As a ND alum, I am not sure I would want him.

He's not leaving because ND has made it tough for him to win there. They've given him everything he's basically asked for other than giving him a lot of academic risks in recruiting. He wanted Field Turf in ND Stadium. They gave it to him. He wanted a jumbotron in ND Stadium. They gave it to him. Both came with some vocal alum criticism. He's been given more money to spend on assistants than any coach in ND history. He's been given cutting edge technologies, updated training facilities, etc.

He wants out because he has pretty much always been a stair climber, looking for the next big job. He interviewed with the Eagles the week of the NC game in 2012. He also has a rough relationship with the fans who have grown tired of his constant excuse making. And then when you look at his resume at ND, there at a lot of bad losses.

He's also a guy who can be maddeningly frustrating with his propensity to pass at the first sign of trouble in a game. Sounds kind of familiar. He's running a lot this year because he finally gave up play calling and hired a new OC.

No and it's not happening this year anyway. Garrett is safe this year.

Have to look to 2019.

Thanks for the post. You make some good points. But something happened with that school and program after Holtz. They had powerful teams with top flight talent back the. Now, even their best teams get destroyed by Alabama, Ohio State, etc.

Heck, when was the last time they won a BIG bowl game? (Fiesta, Orange, Rose, Sugar, Cotton) OK I just looked. Holy cap 1994!

Yeah something happened.

They hired bad coach after bad coach. Let's look at the list of coaches who followed Holtz and the success they had then after leaving ND:

Bob Davie - First time head coach. Did nothing after leaving ND.

Tyrone Willingham - Was a .500 coach at Stanford. Was terrible at ND. Everyone freaked out when ND fired him claiming there might be some racism involved and that UW was lucky to have. He ran UW into the ground in 3 years. Crap coach.

Charlie Weis - Nice coordinator, bad head coach.

Kelly - the most successful of the bunch. One great season. Bunch of other blah seasons. You can't blame talent and things ND is doing to him to keep him from winning when you are losing games to the likes of Tulsa, Navy, Northwestern (when they were bad), etc.

The only two college coaches I would consider are Harbaugh and David Shaw of Stanford. Although Harbaugh doesn’t seem to like being anywhere more than 5 years, amd it’d be nice to have ine coach for the majority of Dak’s career. Maybe Saban, but not sure he translates to the NFL.

Harbaugh is an odd dude, that's for sure.

The name I wanna hear is Jim Harbaugh.
No way on God’s green Earth does Jerry get a guy like Jim Harbaugh. That would take all the attention off Jerry...and that can’t happen now, can it?

Hell no. And I'm a ND fan. I don't think he'd command the respect of the locker room, and if you think that Garrett doesn't accept blame for anything, then you haven't seen anything yet with Kelly.
