No doubt about it.

That's a pure hypothetical, but what's your definition of a successful NFL season, CL? Playoff victory? Or just qualifying? Personally, with this team, I think we ought to win the East and win at least one game given the talent and the fact that it's come up short the first two full seasons under Jason. Some over-delivering on expectations is in order. But I'd have a hard time saying winning the division is an outright disappointment. It's certainly not something I think generally gets a coach fired. You?

Out of morbid curiosity, where in that post above about a general definition of a successful NFL season being at least one playoff victory did you confuse yourself into thinking there was a celebration of mediocrity going on?

Was it the part where I said a head coach probably shouldn't get fired for winning his division?

I think you're intentionally misunderstanding arguments again (I hope it's intentional, anyway), in order to nauseate yourself. Though I'm not sure why you'd want to do that when there's a perfectly reasonable discussion to be had.

i am not sure why you thought my comment was directed at you, specificaly

of course reading comprehension is elementary so maybe that is the issue

or perhaps because you think that your posts do celebrate mediocrity

that is for other posters to decide for themselves

I´d really love a HC with a big personality, with playoff and SB experience, my top choices would be Cowher or Chucky. Let Romo finish his carrer playing for a real HC for once (except the half a season with Parcells of course)

Stop being passive aggressive, visionary. I thought it was directed at me because it directly referenced my post without quoting it.

And, of course posters decide for themselves who's celebrating what. Thankfully. The community here is not stupid.

I was high on Gruden at one point. The stories that have leaked out since re: the amount of dysfunction in TB have kind of turned me off on him. As has the five years out of the league. Cowher I was never high on because I think so much of Dick LeBeau. If we didn't have Garrett, though, I'd want a guy *like* one of those two if he were available. Like Andy Reid this offseason. They don't shake free very often, though.

That would´ve been a great choice as well but unfortunately the job wasn´t open. I really hope it stays that way because it would mean that Garrett would be winning come January but right now I don´t see it, hope I´m wrong.

Really, I just want the team to play to its potential. It's not even about what the exact record is. We've had games we've won, like the Tampa and Cleveland games last year, where I was disgusted because we made so many mistakes and played so badly. Of course we won those games because we had much superior talent, but we still put a poor product on the field. Then we've had some losses where I was satisfied because I thought we played well and just lost to a better team. I remember telling friends of mine about halfway through the Steelers game last year that even if we lose this game, at least we're playing like we can play.

So if we go 8-8 and win the division only because our competition got worse, no, I don't consider that successful. Why, because we're capable of a lot better.

If you mean should the coach be replaced in that scenario, then no, that won't happen even with a 9-7 and first round playoff loss. But not because we can't do better, because that's all Jerry needs to sell his team. And that's his first concern.

But back to playing to our potential: It's funny, the last few years there have been preseason polls on here about what our record should be, and IIRC about 10-6 is what usually gets the most votes. There are probably even more 11-5 than 9-7 votes. Yet when we go 8-8, so many people convince themselves that 8-8 was all we were capable of.

Of course I'm sure a lot of people know better than that, but they want to support Garrett so that's the spin.

Just a good post, all around, CL.

I had us 10-6, exactly, in each of the last three seasons (including this one). So far, we're 4 games over two years behind my expectations, and I'm one of the biggest Garrett supporters out there. I'm not blind to the fact that the team has underperformed my expectations relative to their talent. And four NFL games is obviously significant.
The reasons for that I put down to some inherited roster holes that were not insignificant (mostly at CB and OT), some unfortunate injuries, some bad breaks, and some of the coach and his players not playing well enough. Garret has not been perfect. I like him mostly because I think, playing the averages, he makes many more good moves than bad, and that, eventually, that ought to pay off in terms of wins on the field. That latitude can't last forever, though, even in my book. As I've said before, if he's competitive this year, he should get another to prove himself. But I do understand people thinking that this should be his year. We've got a good team. We should be able to beat some other good teams, even with the limitations we've got.

The only kind of a coach that will help the Cowboys will be the kind that can look Jerry in the eye and tell him as the Coach to leave football decisions, communications, etc. to him and either stay the hell out of the way, or find somebody else to coach the team, period. Anything other than that will be as we've now seen in numerous iterations, a waste of time.
