Would you want the Cowboys to trade up in the 1st round for a franchise QB?

Watching Aikman go to the HOF, reading the trade rumors, and looking at what may be a nice draft for franchise QBs, I'm just wondering where everyone stands on this? This isn't a knock on Drew Bledsoe. If anything, I'd prefer the new QB to learn on the bench for a year. But Bledsoe ain't gonna last much longer, Henson looks like a potential bust or else he'd never even touch NFL Europe, and it would be nice to have another Meredith, Staubach, or Aikman in the house. Do the Cowboys have enough depth to give up the draft picks they would need to be in the running? Do you think there are too many critical needs at other positions? In 2006, will Bledsoe look like the QB he was in the first half of the season, a guy on his way to a Pro Bowl, or the QB he was in the second half of the season, a guy not much more productive than 40-something Vinny Testaverde?

You have 3 intriguing prospects to choose from this year.

Matt Leinart - About as close to a bonafide franchise QB as you're going to get. Pocket passer, knows pro style offenses, full college experience, constant winner in college.

Vince Young - For those who prefer a little mobility in their QB. Big time clutch player.

Jay Cutler - The intriguing prospect. Already some Brett Favre comparisons. Maybe another Ben Roethlisberger, Dan Marino type. Drafted later in the 1st but ends up the best QB taken.

Would ya?

you should add another option. i'd do it, but only if it was a reasonable trade. at whatever cost is unacceptable. give the saints glover and our 1st plus henson or romo...you've got a deal

I'd gladly take VY if the deal included players we want to move and perhaps Romo.

VY is just money. Guys believe in him. I believe in him. I'd have a jersey within 2 days.

I would even forgive Houston for that god awful sewage smell they have been emitting for years, lol :)

I would do it in a heart beat for the right deal......Young is the real deal.

He will be a winner in this league....I would bet the house on it.

no way, I think the surest thing, if you're going to roll the dice, is Quinn next year. We still need to see about our backups and this should be the final year for their evaluation. If we don't trade up, we have a very good chance to fill a lot of holes this draft. FS, 2xLB, 2xOL,..and whatever else.
This draft is deepest at our need positions: LB, OL, and S and weakest at QB. Don't try to fight against the market....you'll lose 9/10.

I would do it, but only if it got us Leinart, I just prefer the pocket style passer over the scrambler. Cutler would have to be one that I would have to really think about and it would depend on how far we would have to move up to get him. Leinart is a proven commodity over both Young and Cutler, he has been better for a longer period of time. Hard to argue with the success and the numbers he has put up in his college career.

There have been college QBs that put up great stats for one season that really elevated their draft stock. Guys like Leaf, Akili Smith and Andre Ware all come to mind. I am not comparing Young to any of those guys, I think hands down he will be a much better player, but I don't want the Cowboys to be the team to take a chance on him.

I would love to get Young and maybe either of the other 2, but I just don't know enough about Cutler. Cutler at #2, don't know! I am sure getting Vince would make me happy. Leinart may be a safer choice, but not a lock to be great. There is risk with any and all draft picks.

There are a couple of others I would not mind trading up for a guy like Hawk, but not all the way to #2 for him.

I feel Vince Young is going to make believers out of doubters before the next few years pass. I would prefer taking him and he becoming a bust than missing him and he becomes the player I think he will be.

So for me the risk is larger to not take him if we could get the chance to draft Vince.

It wouldn't happen. If you only want a trade that gets rid of dead weight, and unrealistic options, then vote no, you're happy with Bledsoe, Romo & Henson. Expect to give up some high draft picks for at least Leinart & Young.

I'm working on it.......:D

I usually don't go out on a limb about a player.......especially a QB, but Young has convinced me he will do whatever it takes to be successful in this league.

By the way!!! I would also trade up for Quinn.;)

if cutler is there after 10 i'd look into moving up for him, so that's where i went. HOWEVER, it will NEVER EVER EVER HAPPEN cause that's long term thinking and if we're SUPERBOWL OR BUST then you don't draft a qb to sit on the bench in the 1st round.

I realize that NFLE doesn't mean a whole lot...BUT...if Henson either stinks it up OR lights it up...it might make a difference in how one would answer this question...

Also, the cost of trading up would be an issue as well.

What Henson does in NFLE will be factor in what round the draft pick will be in after we trade him and nothing else. I hate to say that but I really do believe it to be true. Just my opinion.

Or another option that says:

No, while I am not 100% comfortable with our QB situation, I don't think the need is dire enough that we have to completely implode our draft in order to trade up that high.

Nope.

The cost + no such certainty you get a franchise QB = not worth the risk.

That option is there. It's the next to last one, you want to draft a QB, but not trade up for him.

Has anyone mentioned the cost yet? None of this "our #1 plus a 4 and a guy we're going to cut anyway" crap will cut it. We'd have to give up a kings ransom to get into the top 3.

There is NO QB in this years draft that I would mortgage the next 2 years in getting. Leinart- he may be just like all those Miami and FSU QB's from the 90's that looked really great in college and failed in the pros because the talent differential between teams is much less in the pros. Leinart had more talent surrounding him then any QB in recent history- he really did not have that much pressure on him that often, with Bush and White and the others making plays all the time. He maybe another Palmer- but I don't think so.
