Below's a good article from Raphael Vela blog identifying how well the Cowboys have done in the Parcells era picking up many young contributing players on the 2nd day of the draft and undrafted players. I think somebody on this board mentioned roughly same subject but some of these players are really becoming big contributors & important to this team.
Anyway, Vela said:
I was discussing FB Oliver Hoyte’s value to the Cowboys with a source last week when he gushed, “he’s the rookie of the year for this team right now, hands down.”
That’s a bold statement, but a true one nonetheless. It got me wondering how big a value the undrafted, converted LB was, and then I though of Tony Romo a few miliseconds later.
That got me wondering how many other such bargains the Cowboys’ scouting staff has found in the Parcells’ era. The results are staggering.
Here’s a list of Cowboys’ starters and key role players taken on the draft’s second day and beyond.
Offense
1. Tony Romo, starting QB, undrafted free agent;
2. Oliver Hoyte, starting FB, undrafted FA;
3. Marion Barber, platoon RB, 4th round pick;
4. Patrick Crayton, 3rd WR, 7th round pick;
5. Sam Hurd, backup flanker, undrafted FA;
6. Miles Austin, 5th WR, special teams starter, undrafted FA;
Defense
7. Chris Canty, starting DE, 4th round pick;
8. Bradie James, starting SILB, 4th round pick;
9. Keith Davis, starting FS and ST ace, undrafted FA;
10. Jay Ratliff, 3rd down DT, 7th rounder;
11. Ryan Fowler, backup ILB and ST ace, undrafted FA;
12. Jacques Reeves, dime package CB, 7th round pick;
13. Pat Watkins, backup FS, 5th round pick;
If you wanted to get overly technical you could add Jason Fabini (4th) and Jason Ferguson (7th) two second day picks Parcells made with the Jets.
These are just the regulars on the field. Add projects like Pat McQuistan, Cory Proctor, Nate Jones, Abram Elam, Tyson Thompson and special teams hits like Matt McBriar and you see roughly half the roster is made of late picks and unpicked players.
