Sources: Jags near deal for Holt

The Jacksonville Jaguars are nearing a deal for free agent wide receiver Torry Holt, but it has not yet been finalized, sources tell ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Holt was released by the St. Louis Rams on March 13 shortly before he was due a $1.25 million roster bonus on the 17th.

Holt, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, ranks 11th on the league's all-time reception list with 869 catches.

The 10-year veteran caught just 64 passes last year for 796 yards and three touchdowns, the fewest scoring catches of his career. His total receptions and total yards were the second-lowest of his career, ahead of only his rookie season of 1999.

The Jaguars are in need of a veteran receiver. The team released troubled receiver Matt Jones last month after he violated a plea agreement from an earlier drug charge. They also released Jerry Porter and didn't re-sign free agent Reggie Williams.

I am surprised Holt was available for so long, in fact I'm surprised he was released in the first place. I have to assume there is something wrong wit him that hasn't been made public yet: injury, drugs, legal, etc.

He's only 32 and has been very productive throughout his career until last season. The Rams sucked so it's not surprising that his numbers would go down.

Unless there is something wrong with him I foresee him having a very good season with the Jags.

This was a no brainer. I can't even name two of their current reciever right now. They need recievers in the worst way.

The speculation won't stop. You'll just see the "trade for receiver X" threads double or triple instead.

There have been a lot of rumblings about his knees . . . . but maybe there is some truth to it?

Anyway, I think we're going into the season with what we have plus another rookie draft pick.

An excellent, critical signing by Jacksonville.

Del Rio and Garrard need reinforcements immediately, or that thing is going to get blown up.

Good.

Juaquin Iglesias just fell closer to 69.

He wants to play for the Cowboys. They are his favorite team. He's from Texas.

Well... I guess this is the last that we hear of him until he retires. Garrad is a good qb... but he won't produce big numbers for any WR. Holt will blend in like everyone else did last year and have him dissappear.

Note to myself, don't even consider Holt as a late round sleeper pick in my FFL.

If we aren't the slowest WR corp in the NLF already, Iglesias would put us over the top. No thanks!
