Wrong Game Plan + No Adjustments = OUTCOACHED

My point in submitting this thread is not to excuse the players from poor play, because there was enough of that to go around. But rahter, I want to adress some coaching-related definciencies that sometimes doom this team. I firmly believe that this was a game where such deficiencies directly contrubuted the loss, especially the magnitude of the loss. Our coaches were plainly OUTCOACHED by theirs; on both offense and defense; here's how:

OFFENSE: It started with a bad offensive game plan where we chose to come out throwing, and continue throwing, against a DL and LBs that lost their best run-stopper and had no answer for our running game. Yet we instead chose to try to get into a shooting contest with Breese ??? And when we ran, we hardly ever used both our RBs together. Instead of doing this to cause match up problems for their defense and control the game, we played into their hands – throwing on a day where their DBs played well and our WRs did not. Maybe this last part could not have been predicted, but after the first half it was known; yet we went with the same flawed game plan in the second half. No adjustments! WHY!?!?!? We wee only down 14 with a whole half to go and enough time to try and get back in. The key would have been a running game we never chose to utilize. WHY!?!?!?

DEFENSE: It seems we were running a defensive game plan that was geared towards stopping Breese, but took no accountability for the rest of their backfield. We had great success against their offense on the rare plays where we played man-to-man coverage on their WRs – a match up that favored Dallas - and spread the rest of the defense out to cover the flats. This also brought Roy closer into the Box where he plays best. The problem is, we hardly ever did this. Instead, we lined up in soft zones and drew Roy back into coverage. And they threw those flair-out-screens on us ALL DAY with success. And when they were not doing that, they were exposing R. Willimas in coverage. What was disturbing was that we did not adjust at halftime because our wrong defensive alignments continued, as did their flair-out-screens, and they continued to work.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Our coaches went into the game with the wrong game plan on offense and defense and lacked the ability to adjust or change it after the half. The coaches can blamed the players all they want for executing poorly, but it’s more than fair to put this loss on the coaches for preparing Dallas’ players poorly and miss-managing the play calling throughout the game. What’s disturbing is that we have seen games like this before where our coaches went in with the wrong plan, and when doing so, they demonstrated the inability to impellent contingency plans and halftime adjustments. Coaches can blame players all they want for repeat errors that go uncorrected, but this is a coaching mistake that has gone on under Parcells’ watch far too long and it remains uncorrected.

The Wrong Game Plan + No Adjustments = OUTCOACHED

There’s no simpler formula than that.

I agree with you for the most part.........no adjustments. Our game plan on offense was to throw deep on them. But our WR's couldn't shake loose from some guy named Fred Thomas, and McKensie. Instead of adjusting to shorter crossing patterns, our coaches insisted on going deep, and mostly to the sidelines, avoiding the middle. According to Mickey, they totally took Witten out of the game. The few times we threw in the middle Glenn made some good yardage, but we were not consitant in doing this.

We also had a good running game going, and for some unknown reason, we stopped running. I do not place much of the blame on Romo for this debacle. He tried to execute the plays given to him, but the receivers had no seperation forcing him to try to make a play by throwing in some very tight spots.

I know there are many here waiting for a game like this to bash Romo, but IMO, he has little of the blame. The defense could not stop NO, and made no adjustments at all. This one is on the coaching staff................

I disagree with Mickey. I don't think the game-plan was ever drown up properly to use Witten as an effective receiver. As you said, we had a good running game that we never used. Had we used it, the LBs would be drawn to it, and that would've freed up Witten in the passing game. Thay saw we were not running and thus committred extra atterntion to covering Witten. The whole game plan was flawed because we chose to try and use the pass to set up the run, and we never did so because we never got the passing game going. What's so IDIOTIC about this game plan is that we were able to run on them regardless of how porrly our passing game was going. Yet we stubbournly chose the follow a flawed game plan rahter than adjust and take control of the game - and in turn , set-up/open up the passing game - with the running game.

Romo did have a bad game, but I think he felt too much of the pressure to get into a shootout with Brees and this led him into some poor throws. What's IDIOTIC is that the coaches put Romo in that position because they made the passing game the focal point of the game plan when they should have been using the running game as the focal point instrad. I think Romo is a good QB and now we get to see how good he can be as he learns/bounces back from this. I think he'll be fine because he's tough as nails. We'll see...

I think he tried to adjust he tried blitzing, staying back, he tried man, he tried zone coverages all to no avail. Payton attached Dallas weaknesses, lack of pass rush and inability of our Safeties to play the ball. He attacked underneath with the TEs and 3rd WRs when Dallas went man and went over the top after Davis and Williams when Dallas went zone. Dallas got whipped on the Oline, Dline and in coverage. Not sure what adjustments there are for that.

I dont agree with the statement that they made Romo the focal point of the offense. People need to watch for themselves and not listen to everything Madden and others have to say. NO had the ball almost the entire first half and Dallas didnt convert on 3rd time with near the effenciency they had but for the most were in manageable situations most of the time.

Like I have said before Passive playcalling sucks. We have no 'killer instinct' and do not know how to put our foot on the other teams throat. Our playcalling is way passive and we show no aggression on either side of the ball. Our vaunted defense is a read and react defense, you cant attack out of that. Its a bend but dont break defense that has been broken several times over the year. We do not seem to have the ability to adjust to anything that surprises us. With the Saints throwing screens all day long, we continue to bull rush up the side of the field and leaving Bush wide open with few defenders even able to touch him, cause there all up field chasing a phantom.

We have the players to be great, but the ciaching to be an 8-8 team. Parcells is coaching the life out of this team. Julius is a prime example. He seems to look for the biggest pile to hit to prove how tough he is to Parcells, rather then cut to the right and take it to the house and show all us fans how good he could be. Why, cause thats what Parcells wants.

Uggg.... Win or lose, I want Parcells and his staff gone ASAP.

This may be the dumbest thing I have ever read.

Do you think Parcells would bench JJ if he broke a TD run instead of running into a pile?

It was obvious to me that Parcells purposely planned a very simple game plan designed to make it very difficult for the Cowboys to win this game. His reasoning was twofold.1)To set up for the rematch in the playoffs by not giving the Saints an idea of what this team is really capable of and to give them a false sense of security.2)This team needed a reality check before the playoffs and he wanted to make sure that happened. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go feed my unicorns.

The only adjustment in this game was to Parcells' face...The Shellshocked look after the game started.

I was shocked at how poorly the defense played last night.

There were breakdowns in the coverage everywhere.

- there were many missed tackles
- NO adjustments
- Romo was in an impossible position to win this game.

If you've listened and watched Parcells you'd realize that yes, Jones' playing time would decrease.

Parcells has stated numerous times that Barber "thinks he Gale Sayers" or "doesn't run to the safety". This is Parcellsspeak for improvising or not hitting the hole the way the play's designed.

I really believe that Parcells has overcoached many of the Dallas players. Many are now too busy thinking instead of relying on the God-given abilities that got them to the NFL.
