Wrong Packer Lineman?

I am not one to second guess free agent signings. Nor am I going to act like I can tell when a offensive guard is having a good or bad year. I think tackle is a bit easier for us laymen to gauge, but with Mike Wahl making the Pro Bowl did we pick the wrong Green Bay guard? I am in Charlotte and just read where Wahl is making his first trip to Hawaii. Did we attempt to sign him, or were we locked on Rivera the whold time? I find it interesting that Wahl is, I'm pretty sure, 4-5 years younger than Rivera, and can play tackle as well. Just curious what the thought process was at the time between the 2?

I think Parcells wanted the vet who was more of a "sure thing". Yet another great OL move by Dallas. I'm STILL waiting for us to get something right on the OL. Sickening. You watch the Panthers sign Wahle and the Giants sign McKenzie and we get an overpayed, old, has-been. I just don't know how to feel optimistic about this team's future with the state of our line. We need another great draft and a few great FA moves to go anywhere.

AND let's not forget, Wahle has played both guard and tackle in the past...it would have been nice to have that flexiblity in a pinch...ya know, say for instance we weren't comfortable with forcing a rookie to start at RT...or if we lost out LT for the season.

I knew we made a mistake when I read an interview with Ron Wolfe talking about how he felt bad that the Packers lost both guards, but the one he wished Green Bay could have kept was Wahle. :(

Of course he wanted to keep Wahle.

Wahle is 5 years younger than Rivera.

While it's true Wahle may be the better player, his margin of youth would make him more appealing either way.

At least that's what Im telling myself.

What are way paying Wolfe for that consulting work? He should have stopped Parcells from the start. Oh well, maybe we never had a realistic shot in the negotiations.

Like I posted in another thread who says that Wahl even wanted to come to Dallas. IIRC he signed pretty soon after the free agent period started.

As much as I wanted Darren Sharper, I won't criticize Parcells and Jones for that either because he signed almost the second after getting cut. It seems like teams today (even though they are breaking some rules) already know which players that have a realistic shot with as soon as they are allowed to sign.

I think we all knew it at the time, but we were drinking too much trust in Bill kool aid. Common sense would dictate that the much younger Wahle would be a better sign- they just didn't want to have to pay him so much- then they go out and give the crip a ton of money for his diminishing returns.

Don't shoot BP for this one.

Wahle didn't want to go to Dallas. He wanted to go HOME to NC.

I didn't realize he was from NC, but that is why I was asking what the thought process was in looking at the 2.

Yup he's a local boy and soon as their season ended the courting was on it's way. We heard about it the DAY FA started here in the Queen city

Very true.

The Rivera signing will haunt this franchise for years.

You simply do not pay a pure guard the kind of money we are paying him if all he can do is play guard and poorly at that.

If we were smart, we would draft another guard and if he can do it put him at center.

Signinig Rivera was a mistake.....I wish Jerry would of took the money back when he injured his back.

We have alot of money spent on the OL and it sucks.....Adams is probally the only keeper I see currently on this OL....The two young tackles will be solid backups....nothing more IMHO

I was not excited before Rivera hurt his back. He was a solid player for Green Bay, but I believe his Pro Bowls were not a good barometer of his talent. He functioned very well in that system, but he certainly was no dominating force. We simply got stars in our eyes, got overly impressed with his intangibles and made a very bad signing. The injury was just the icing on the cake.

Yep, I was screaming to take the money back after he made the offer - may not have been classy but it would have corrected an earlier mistake.
