There are alot of good things happening with the Dallas Cowboys. M Bennett, Felix Jones, Choice, Doug Free developing, Sam Hurd getting better. But there are too many holes in our second string right now. I know its early but if any of these players go down we are in trouble. Jerry has really left the cubbard bare for the time being. Thats the type of things that he did in the past. To tell you the truth, our second string looked to me like a typical third string. Now the good thing is the young guys will need time to develop. They should get better, but IMO we shouldnt be depending on these guys right now UNTIL THEY have had time to get better. We are one snap away from disaster at several positions until these guys can develop. You dont have 2nd stringers being developmental rookie's....you at least have some other vets in there. WE dont....here are the positions of problem.

Center- if gurode goes down proctor goes in and we are in big trouble...this is not a hold the fort type of guy, not at all, he is terrible....jerry you are stupid for not replacing him...dumb GM move, thank god for doug free or i would say the same thing for tackle...lets hope holland stays healthy too at guard..

ILB- Williams and carpenter-both are young and williams is not ready...carpenter may never be ready....if brooking goes down we are in trouble...or worse yet bradie james

OLB - If d ware goes down you can forget about it...spencer may just be average and if butler has to play right now we are in trouble...if ware went down they would have to move brooking and OLB and start carpenter, i dont like our rush at all if that happens

cb and safety, brown stinks and ball doesnt have alot of experience....could be trouble here with newman getting injured again

backup NT - not ready there either

if any of the starters get hurt here in the first 8 to 10 games we are in trouble,,hopefully the backups will be up to speed by then but if you are a good GM you dont depend on rookies---you have backup vets in there ---just another poor decision by jerrah....----injuries are going to hit, they always do --- jerry you should know that ---

So the Steelers won the Super Bowl last year because of their backups?

So if the whole team stays healthy and we win the superbowl, will that change your mind?

You can't have probowlers at every position.

Another thread about how we need more depth? I agree the backups didn't look good last night, but it was the first preseason game. At one point, our second and third stringers were playing against Oakland's first stringers. You can't read too much into preseason performances. It's all about evaluation of individuals. We weren't watching real game situations. I want to see some hope where our backups are concerned too, but it's way too early to panic.

They certainly didn't fail because of an average number of injuries. Kind of like the Cowboys supposedly did.

Who is injured is just as important as how many are injured. Ever thought about that?

That's why it's important for the majority of your depth to not be complete trash. The Cowboys are an injury away from being abysmal at nearly every spot on the team.

well most teams don't have good back ups either but were blessed at tightend and RB, but let me just say this....if our starters go down it's over...thankfully Kitna didn't look too bad but every other started did not impress at all.

Bingo!! My exact question.. People act as if our backups are going to be in the game all at the same time. It's never gonna happen exceopt during preseason when it's suppose to happen..

I'm undoubtedly concerned about our depth at OL, DL, LB and CB.

I've said it before, but I only like about the top 37 of our projected 53 man team. Granted, every team has some scrub backups, young unproven guys, etc. But we have some very limited depth in spots.

However, with that said, it's key to point this out: We are also exceptionally strong at QB with Kitna, go three deep at RB, have perhaps the game's top backup tight end, seemingly good depth at receiver and a backup OL or two that have a number of starts under their belts with Holland and Proctor.

So if we're only as good as our backups, we're damn, damn good in some spots. Clearly, frustratingly weak in others.

You've just described every team in the NFL....

The concern I have is that we're counting on a number of late-round-type picks as backups on defense. It's easy to say last night was just one preseason game, but are Mickens, Brown, Williams, Butler, etc., all going to turn into quality depth by preseason's end?

The simple truth is if we end up relying on anyone from this draft class outside of Buehler, we're in trouble.

while I agree with the OP that we have no depth. At least our core of starters is young. we dont have ageing stars that need replacing.
