You Call the Play!

You know the drill, because like most teams, you've been here before …it’s the fourth quarter, less than 2-minutes remain on the official game clock, you’re out of “time-outs,” and you’re down by 6-points.

Your team has just run the ball back to your own 40 yard-line (normally that could be defined as good field position …), your Center breaks huddle and heads straight for the line of scrimmage — Bledsoe or Bill Parcells made the play.

Here are some variables that may go into the decision making process for the play:

- You’re at home (conditions are optimal and the crowd is "user-friendly")

- You’re playing an NFC-East rival team (the first of two games)

Call the play against …

The Skins ...or

The Gnats ...or

The Eagles

What does your front OL look like (what players do you send out for the play).

Here’s my contribution …(NOTE: You don’t have to follow my lead …generate your own team scenario, limited only by your own football saavy).

Jimmy Jones will definitely implement a rush package in an attempt to limit TO or TG to short yardage (perhaps keeping Dawkins honest for a possible screen pass to Jason Witten or another TE); knowing that Bill can’t win with a field goal.

Eagles Defensive front for the play ...

Jevon Kearse (DE)
Darren Howard (DE)

Trent Cole (DT)
Ed Jasper (DT)

Sheldon Brown (CB)
Lito Shepperd (CB)

Brian Dawkins (FS)
Michael Lewis (SS)

Jeremiah Trotter (LB/WLL)
Shawn Barber (MLB/)
Dhani Jones (LB/SAM)

What's your play?

Pretty transparent attempt to get that Eagles defensive lineup displayed, ha ha, but I'll play along.

Cole had a nice year last season, but til Bunkley is up to speed, I'm still seeing up the middle as the weaker spot.

JJ takes it 60 yds to the house up the middle behind a beefed up and agile Al Johnson, pulling center par excellance. There was a point where Dawkins could have clipped him but TO put the mother of all vengeful stiff arms on him. There was also hope that Shepard could stop him but per usual he was eating Terry's real or imaginary dust.

But the very obvious point has been taken..in paper that Eagle D more formidable than ever. I'd be willing to admit the early power poll division led if it weren't that imo the biggest factor effecting the Eagles this year will be a Childress-less McNabb.

And let's face it, with the Boys offensive weapons this year, more than just Dawkins will be "kept honest".

OK, here is how I see it against the Eagles.

E.J. Whitley at center for the Boys. His "man-love" West Texas grin keeps Trent Cole and Ed Jasper at least 3 feet away. "No way" Cole is heard saying.

This allows each Eagle DE to be double teamed. A pack of cigs is seen falling out of Bledsoe's wristband.

TO streaks down the left sideline, as he approaches Sheldon Brown, TO pulls a cell phone out from under his jersey and says "Sheldon, it's your agent". Sheldon stops to talk. FS Brian Dawkins quickly sneaks up on TO when TO unleashes a tirade of "you're tired, you're a homo .....". Dawkins just can't recover from this.

Bledsoe drops his cigarette and launches a scud that TO catches with one hand while a pom-pom is being waved in the other.

Extra point good. Cowboys win again.

Put that on my review.

Play action fake and after the whole Iggle d bites because they know how much Parcells loves to run on first down Bledsoe hits TO streaking down the field for a TD.

as always a pleasure reading your post LTN...and yes it was a rather lousy way to let us know how potentially dominate the Eagles Dline could become......

but last year only 10 rookies started and played all 16 games in the NFL and Dallas had 2 of them in DeMarcus Ware and Rob Petitti ***hope I spelled Rob's last name right:eek::***

so any team counting on rookie help isn't likely to get it...

So PT to answer your question...tell me who is covering Witten and Fasano

if it is Dawkins and Lewis than I am going over the top to either Glenn or Owens if it is a LB covering the TE's than I am going there and if they are really good coverage LB's than I am running on ya..

I'm getting ready to walk into a meeting right now, will respond to all posters Later today.

Get ready for some serious dialogue on this one -- your plays better have some validity to it. Otherwise I may have to reverse the call!;)

Phoenix, you gave us a hypothtical without enough info, at least for me, someone who actually coaches the game and makes these decisions...

I would run the play based on how my previous offensive plays worked or did not work. I may have set the defense up, earlier in the game, just so I could run a play or two in a situation just like this...it could be a run, it could be a pass.

Also, since this isn't the first game of the season, I would base my decision on game film from previous Eagles' games.

Sorry pal, can't answer a question like this without a significant amount of additional information...anyone that does is just an amateur shooting from the hip...no disrespect intended.

Two minutes is a great deal of time, even if there are no timeouts left.

I was at the Dallas-Philly game in Philly last year and I can't think of a drive that better fits your scenario than the one the Cowboys put together to pull within 6 in the fourth quarter last year.

Jimmy Johnson's defense has always been very aggressive and is susceptible to plays that beat the blitz. I might start the drive with a screen pass to Julius Jones, mix in a draw play, and really bait the Eagles to blitz so that I can get either TO or Glenn one on one with Sheppard (who is vastly overrated).

Glenn torched Sheppard everytime they were one on one in both games last year, so assuming TO can draw some coverages over to his side, I look for iso Glenn on Sheppard and go over the top to win the game.

What kind of coverage in the secondary?

The Cowboys are in a 2-TE, 2-WR set and I'm assuming Dawkins is rolled to TO's side with Sheldon Brown.

Witten's probably going to be singled with the strong safety, a LB will be on Fasano and Terry Glenn will have man-to-man by Lito Sheppard.

I'll take any of these three matchups, oh wait, that's not really situation specific, that's ALL SEASON.

In the end, TO probably beats the double team for 60 yard TD on a post route.

Two Tight End set! Split Owens and Glenn wide.

With this we can do anything we want! Draw play to J.J. will be a thing of beauty next season with this formation.

Coach, the particulars he left out are that with two minutes left we're down by six only due only to a few unfortunate butterfinger fumbles on returns (but don't worry, an 'example' will be made tomorrow). All day, the pass has been setting up the run, reverse play action, and Bledsoe has been chunking it safely down field like some wco accountant. You've set up both the long pass and long run.

The only real question is whom you prefer to embarrass more... media hog Dhani by making him bite like Arrington, over-rated Howard who's still crying about that 05 trade never happening, or Mr Wonderful Dawkins.

I like Glenn, Owens, Witten, Fasano, Barber Flea Flicker. The D will be waiting of the pass when they see Barber but when bledsoe hands him the ball the D will bite thinking We where trying to throw them off then Barber pitches back to Drew who hits I'll say Glenn deep for a TD reason is no CB in his right mind will leave Owens uncovered...

I'll keep it real simple, I'll even give you triple coverage with your 3 best DBs on TO in the secondary.

Drew Bledsoe throws a rocket down the seam. TO burns which CB had him at the line of scrimmage, splits the remaining 2 DBs hauls in the bullet over his shoulder and all you see is cleats and elbows all the way to END zone.

Yep the things a STUD WR can do!!!!! I know you know what am talking about:laugh2:

vs. Eagles

I purposedly turn the ball over to allow McNabb to throw an INT to Roy who runs for a TD to win the game.

vs. Skins

First play, base formation. Throw one about 35 yards to Glenn who "flops" and draws a pass interference bringing the ball to the Skins 25 yard line.

3 WR set, send Crayton in motion as he winds up taking a hand off and then chucks it downfield to a wide open Owens. This will absolutely drive Gibbs nuts who hated it when Landry used to get him on trick plays and hates it when Parcells gets him on trick plays.

There's no doubt in my mind Gibbs will try to have Randle El on a trick play against the Cowboys, but my play beats him to the punch. I then fully don't expect a handshake from Gibbs and him complaining about the refs on Monday.

Ravens pre-season, year 1 of T.O./Eagles. EVERYONE knew it was coming. EVERYONE. I was amazed that it was so easy. And scared.

We're taking a nice break during this meeting I'm in, so I have a chance to respond to at least one or two posts ...

Uncertain if I've ever told you an untruth before -- don't plan to either! So take my word for it until you can prove otherwise, I wasn't trying to lay out our defensive weapons for the sake of being transparent -- even though I could see how you could easily not choose to believe that. I'm stating facts.
You'll see the best we can come up with under that type of scenario. Now if I was trying to be transparent, this next comment would fit that bill ...unlike the 2005 Eagles injury reserve smitten second-team defense, the defensive team I'm proposing is the 2006 Eagles "A" team.;)

Cole had a nice year last season, but til Bunkley is up to speed, I'm still seeing up the middle as the weaker spot.

Seriously! I noticed COle Myself last year. Hopefully he can continue that type of performance.

I'll assume you're calling a running play. Hmmmm. Wouldn't be my choice with time running out, in your own territory. You're placing a lot of responsibility on a player who has been known to cough-up the pill from time-to-time. Wouldn't it be more prudent to hug the sidelines with some short passes until something opens in the flat? But that's how you see it.

But the very obvious point has been taken..in paper that Eagle D more formidable than ever.

Well, at least on paper. But I think we will be competitively better than last year.

And let's face it, with the Boys offensive weapons this year, more than just Dawkins will be "kept honest"

Heyyyyy ...are you being "transparent?";)

Less than two minutes remaining? Is that 1:58 or :25? It makes a big difference you know.

Let's say it is 1:58. Honestly, I would call two plays in the huddle. The first would be a quick-hitting draw play, then a crossing pattern to Glenn.
