I think jerry jones gets maligned for no reason. Just because he is an owner who actually cares about his team and is actively involved instead of being some rich fat cat who just shows up to his luxury suite on Sundays, he gets labeled for being the real coach.
Jerry is not a fool. The bottom line is that he wants to win. If it means allowing a coach to make his own decisions, he will allow that. Jerry is not Al Davis. Jerry is not the type of owner who says you have to win his way or else.
The problem is that Wade Phillips is not an authoritative figure and he never has been. The head coach is more of a symbolic figure anyway. He is a motivator and a symbol for the rest of the team. The coordinators call the plays unless the head coach makes an exception and gets involved. The head coach sets the discipline and tone of the lockerroom. The discipline on this team has faded since Parcells left. Wade is not an intimidating figure and sometimes players need to feel a little scared. I don't think you have to overdo it like Parcells and take away players' dignity but Wade is pretty chill.
I don't think Jerry is keeping Wade as a puppet. I think Jerry genuinely feels Wade is a good guy and the players genuinely respect him. I think Jerry wants to give Wade a second chance. Also, the alternatives are not realistic. With Mike Holmgren and Bill Cowher, you would have to replace most of your assistants and instill a brand new philosophy which would require a learning curve and essentially starting over.
The only coach that I can see succeed given our situation is Marty Schottenheimer. He could come here, leave the assistants alone and be an old fashioned talker, motivator and disciplinarian and work within the system. The only problem is Mary chokes and gets conservative in the playoffs
