If we are going late round guys (I believe that was the original stipulation for a pet cat) JJ Wilcox all day... I was sold on him developing into a heat seeking thumper lol
If we are including early rounds Mo Claiborne. I am an LSU fan so getting Mo was a wet dream...only it turned out the moisture was blood and tears lol

This time of year is when “Pet Cat Disease” (or PCD) hits the strongest. You know the symptoms- Cowboys fans breaking into a cold sweat after watching a draft prospect’s overrated college highlight film, then falling in draft love with a mediocre pro prospect this team “has to have”. We were thrilled when they were drafted. We’ve all probably had at least 1 or 2 pet cats that turned out to be not that great.

Which leads me to ask: Who are the all time overrated Cowboys fans Pet Cats of the past? Here’s my short list:
  • Rico Gathers- a former basketball player drafted in the 6th round, projected as a TE. Gathers quickly became an OTA and preseason legend- especially against UFAs in preseason games. You know like a 175 lb safety from a directional mid-major school that would never make an NFL roster. I’ve never seen a more overrated player than Gathers, who stayed stashed on this roster for too long.
  • Beau Morgan- a former QB from Air Force who was being converted to RB in the Jimmy Johnson/Barry Switzer era. Morgan was an UFA who was essentially just a camp body who happened to lead the team in rushing in preseason. Which somehow convinced loads of fans that he was the real deal. Two straight preseasons Morgan led the team in rushing. And two straight Septembers, the Cowboys cut him, much to the pain of many Cowboys pet cat owners.
  • Alexander Wright- a former second round pick of the Cowboys in Jimmy’s second draft in 1990. Wright was drafted because of his 4.4 speed and nothing else. He was fast, but as the old sayings go, “He couldn’t catch a cold”, or “Couldn’t play dead in a western movie”. Fast doesn’t make you a football player. Wright’s best year as a Cowboy was his first, when he caught 11 passes. Was traded to the raiders in ‘92.
There are many more infamous overrated pet cats. Who’s on your list?
Respectfully adding this guy.. Never understood why he ever started for us. He was Tom Landry's pet cat. Hard to believe after Meredith, Craig Morton and Rodger as his QBs..that this guy was all that Landry could find to play QB. Really a nimrod if you ask me.

I have never been as disappointed by any player as I was with Morris Claiborne.

But probably my favorite pet cat who disappointed was Josh Brent. I really thought he would become a stud DT, and maybe he would have been, but he was just too troubled to make football a priority.
Bobby Carpenter. Was Parcells pet cat that was legendary.

Roy “Horse Collar” Williams. Good rookie. Ok second year. Liability the rest of his career. I thought he was terrible.

Maybe he wasn’t a pet cat but he still stunk.

How about Darren Benson? We heard for years he was going to revolutionize the DT position. Guy never player. Matt Johnson was another one. The best athlete to never be healthy.

I've already said that the ONLY place I've ever seen that term is here, but that in no way makes it a commonly used term. To me a commonly used term is something that can be used anywhere and people will know what it is. So if I go to some other user site, say like another team's site or in a sports related article on like FOX News channel and throw pet cat out there others are going to say it been commonly used for a long time?
.
.
I believe so, yes.

It's commonly used. I'm guessing you just never noticed.

Who could forget the dynamic duo of John "trash can full of rocks" Nix and Willie "pants pooper" Blade 20 years ago?

And the lesson a lot of fans still haven't learned from that is the later it gets in the draft, the less likely the player is going to turn out to even be worth making the roster. I see mocks where fans wait to fix our problem positions until the fourth round or later and think that will somehow get it done. You're fortunate if even your third-round picks turn into quality starters. Blade, Chaz Green, J.J. Wilcox, Jason Williams, Robert Brewster were abject failures ... if you get a Maliek Collins, Tyrone Crawford or Jourdan Lews, you should be thankful .... if you get a DeMarco Murray, Jason Witten or Michael Gallup, you should be ecstatic.

Not sure yet what category Connor McGovern and Neville Gallimore fall into. I want us to hit on all of our picks and pet cats, but that just isn't the reality of it. That's why it's really important how we approach those first couple of rounds.

I hope we can sticky this thread because I have a feeling Kyle Pitts may end up here in a few years.

Pet Cats that we actually drafted?

I spent most of grad school researching sport transfer, so Rico Gathers was a big one for me. I still wonder if moving him to Tackle would have been the better move.

I also liked Jalen Jelks a lot, but I had scouted him since he was a sophomore in high school.

Pet Cats in general?
Taylor Mays. Part USC homer, part being fascinated with size/athleticism. I though Taylor Mays would be what Kam Chancellor ended up being.

I was sure Steve Pelluer was the next Roger Staubach. I was living in northern California where most people root for the Commie Niners. In the 80s with the Cowboys in decline and the 9ers doing so well, this was FRUSTRATING. It was clear by then that the Cowboys weren't going all the way with Danny White, and fans wanted Roger Staubach to come back. I remember when we were getting clobbered by the Bears in a game on CBS, a Cowboy fan held up a sign that said, "CBS -- Come Back Staubach." Pelluer showed some good scrambling abilities like Staubach. He had a good arm and could make some good plays. But just when you thought he was going to win the starting position over White like Staubach did over Morton, he would make a really boneheaded decision. He just wasn't as good as White, and the team collapsed in '86 under his leadership when he had to play in place of an injured Danny White. Besides, the team had many problems besides quarterback. But in my mind, I wanted to believe we had found our guy, plus the team had just added Herschel Walker, who actually was the real deal. We just didn't have a good enough team built around him.

Then there was our third-string QB, Reggie Collier. She showed some flashes, and so I thought maybe he was the next Staubach.

Another pet cat: Quintin Coryatt was going to be our next great linebacker.

I fell for Jelks also. Man, he just looks/sounds like he can play. He was one of the last "lanky" type players I fell for. Generally, lanky players don't have the build to succeed.

Man, when Carroll passed on Mays for Earl, I pretty much realized Mays was just a really fast big guy. He was so stiff, which was also a lesson for me. Straightline athletes generally don't make good players, though some can be serviceable as Jeff Heath.
