I honestly hope not. I want a fair contract for both parties. I don't understand why the Cowboys are obligated in paying him the highest pay for his position.

Because he's the best OG in football?

I mean that's how it usually works.

Because he's the best player at his position and if you're even in that conversation you get more than anyone has to that point. It's the natural escalation of salaries working in harmony with a rising salary cap number.

Now having said that, I'll never understand fans who take some sort of pride when a player gets a huge deal. I'm a Cowboys fan not a Zack Martin fan. I hope they get him as cheap as possible. I hope Martin's agent makes some sort of filing error that forces Martin to play for the league minimum.

Team over player. Always.
I slightly disagree, team is made of players and we want players to give their 100% and this can only happen if they are treated fairly

Yeah it always cost more to pay them later down the road. Makes me think of Washington and how theyve bungled Cousins contract.

I think Martin will also take a discount on top of that for an early signing. Honestly though Im not sure what the market is and how much signing early factors in. I do believe early signings in the past came with a discount. Martin however, is the best of the best and I cant see him not being paid accordingly.
I look at it from the angle that I'd rather pay a player what is fair (relative to what others are being paid in the league) and have a content player, than sucker them into a low contract and have them be unhappy, holding out, etc. Martin is in the very top echelon of players at his position and he should be paid as such, in fairness. Is any player worth 60, 80, or $100M? IMO, absolutely not. But my opinion doesn't matter. Simple economic law says they will get paid what the market bears. By the time Martin's new contract nears its end, he be middle of the road in regards to cost, IMO.

This dude could saunter into jerry's office, right after practice, smelling like a pig, sit in Jerrys chair, put his feet up on the desk and blurt out a number...............after a puff of one of Jerry's finest cigars and making smoke rings.

I am still holding out hope that Martin decides to sign the long-term deal like Tyron did. If you love the Cowboys and want to stay here then sometimes you take a hit to do it.

When it comes raise time at your job do you go in demanding being paid like the top 1% in your field or that you love the place so much that you would take the standard 3% COLA

I do too. I think it is possible to pay a player well and still not overspend. Tyrone Smith's contract was great for the team. I dont remember the specifics but I do recall Smith will be a Cowboy for a very long time.

The obvious down side to underpaying is a discontent player. When a player out performs his contract the team will either have to compensate or deal with the headache. The fact Jerry takes care of his own has always helped make the Cowboys that much more of an attractive team to play for. In Martins case whatever we spend will be well worth it. Yes Id like a deal, but priority one is keeping Martin a Cowboy.

Yep...to the chagrin of many, ol' Jerry takes care of his players if he feels they are outperforming their contract. The difference now, as opposed to a few years ago, is that he quit paying big bucks to older players.

What the heck is a 3% COLA? I didn't know anyone still got those...lol. Do I think Martin is going to be the highest paid guard in the league? Yes. I was just being an irrational Cowboys fan hoping he would take less money and sign for 10 years. Lol.

Some companies I have worked used to give that as a reason for a low raise. In certain states any little bit helps.
